What should we do? I agree we should do more but I'm what way?

Patrol the waters to pick up boats that look like they're going to sink - we did that before but stopped as we thought it just encouraged people to go out to see in any way they could. Start that again?

I can see both sides. If we make it more likely for them to get picked up more gangs will exploit that leading to more deaths. But we can't let them drown.

I think the Germans are right that all of Europe needs to share the asylum burden.

Shitey situation and I have no real idea what we should do.

Share the burden, commit proper money to the problem, take some of them on, change the way these people are dehumanised and their deaths count for nothing ... Swarm etc

Europes shame what is going on.

We need to start be serious about taking refugees from these countries. We have taken in 216 from Syria which is fucking shameful.
At the moment this isn't about long term strategy, there is an crisis happening right now. Cameron is too scared to anger the frankly xenophobic elements of his party and wider general public.
We are responsible for the military intervention which precipitated this situation.

But then we have an utter cunt of a leader who comes out with shite like this today.....

Cameron insisted the best solution to the crisis was to bring peace and stability to the Middle East. During a visit to Northamptonshire, he said: “We have taken a number of genuine asylum seekers from Syrian refugee camps and we keep that under review, but we think the most important thing is to try to bring peace and stability to that part of the world.

“I don't think there is an answer that can be achieved simply by taking more and more refugees.”

Would sharing the burden and properly assisting mean public support for increased defense spending so we can improve our humanitarian contribution (aid drops, camp building, naval patrols - all work unquestonably best undertaken by our military) or does it just mean that we're saying the UK will be a more welcoming destination once they've crossed a continent?

Where will these people be settled? Do we have the capacity to house these refugees in a responsible way that won't lead to ghettoisation and squalor?

What are the long term impacts of major resettlement? Can we build schools and provide these people with basic services that are befitting of someone living in this country?

How long will they stay? These people are fleeing conflict, many will want to return to their home country. Can we as an international community do anything to improve the situation in Syria and bring that country peace so that it's people may return?

We need to do our bit in taking these refugees in. Leaving Germany to take so many people is an absolute disgrace tbh, and I include the likes of France and Italy along with us.

The main problem is that the government and media have demonised the refugees in such a way that the majority of people in this country would go apeshit if we started letting more people in.

I think that picture of the wee boy dead in the sea will be the breaking point for a lot of people. Can already see the change in tone on the front of the sun tomorrow.

You might think it's wreckless but as it stands I don't think these things matter. When there are kids being washed up on beaches on the Med we just need to take these people in and worry about the rest after.
With all the wealth and resources available in Europe (and the UK specifically) no one can tell me we can't accommodate more than a couple of hundred people.

Maybe we should have a focus group on this or some kind of think tank. In the meantime they'll just have to be left to die, I guess.

All valid points, but the situation is urgent. Germany are taking on 800,000 and shitebag Britain a couple of hundred. We have to do more regardless of the long term issues.
