Anyone else find that fairly young people are still pretty clueless about computer/IT stuff? You'd think that someone aged 26, with a degree, in today's computer-centric world, would know how to add a printer FFS.

I'm shit at anything IT related.
I had to scan a page in my wee special delivery book for someone at work last week. The copy that came out was on the most humongous piece of paper I've ever seen. I didn't even know they made sheets of paper that size. The actual scanned page took up about 1/20th of it.

Pretty strange eh. Just a missed generation I think, the next one will be totally clued up. I've had to go change a 20-somethings mouse batteries today because that was too difficult a task for them to do.

When I handed it to them they were like 'Thanks '
I could have guessed that about you. I'd also guess you're the type to take pride in your IT illiteracy. WHAT AM A LIKE etc.

It's just weird. Seems to be really common which is what I find odd as it's not like they were this generation denied computers or access to the internet. Maybe growing up copying a code out of a book to "write" your own ping-pong tennis game on an amstrad sets you up well for life after all.
It makes it hard to deal with folk as you don't want to patronise the fuck out of them by saying "This is a laptop." They sit and look blankly at you and so you wonder whether they are thinking "FFS this guy is a patronising prick" then you ask, so you cool to take it from there? And then 2 minutes later they're going online using internet explorer and they're like "my printers not working, can I get a mouse, where will I find email?"

You've just got to imagine how most people use technology now. They understand smartphones, well the individual apps at least, that's no bother. They can use a web browser, just, to get to Facebook and stuff. They can check their email. They can use Word and Powerpoint. After that though, most won't have a clue, or want to have a clue. They just expect things to work and will blame the technology if it doesn't.
I kind of see it like driving. Most know the basics, they can get the car moving, and make it stop, can fill it with petrol etc. Ask them to check the oil levels, or change a tyre, and they'll just nope the fuck out of there. They're* just not interested.
*finding it funny that the "they" in my head is daft orange lassies and tracky wearing gimp laddies, like Mikey.

This in droves. Got to include myself in that (even if I don't consider myself an "IT guy"). IT guys are total basket cases of the highest order. Completely out of touch with normal reality and social conventions. No idea how to behave or act around other humans. Proper, proper, weirdos.
There's only one IT guy in my work that isn't in the weirdo VL category, and even then he's not that normal. They're a strangely arrogant bunch as well.
