This is quite clearly the case and anyone who tries to say there isn't a vast difference between 11 and 15 has a case of "the lady doth protest too much", imo.

Would go along with that, and I think this is something that's across our society. For example, I saw an article today about Jeremy Forrest, the teacher who was seemingly 'in love' and ran off to France with a 15 year old pupil, where he was branded a paedophile. I think there's something seriously wrong with our terminology if his actions lead to the same labeling as someone who abducts and rapes a 5 year old.

Two very different crimes, but both tagged with the same stigmatic name.

Last bit I definitely agree with, but we'll have to disagree on our view of offences with older children. My opinion is probably partly down to being a bit older than you and partly down to the fact I work with children of those ages, which both make me less tolerant of those who take advantage of their position of trust. I used to have a wee joke about Rix with the songs ("she looked 18" etc) in the past, but my perspective has changed a lot since I became a teacher. Still just kids.

I get what you're saying about taking advantage of their position, and I didn't say it was acceptable only that I consider it less morally reprehensible than some people appear to.

It isn't automatically a case of a teacher, carer etc. seeking out a vulnurable child to exploit and people do fall for each other. Hell, we even teach it in English class with Romeo and Juliet, a story of forbidden love where Juliet is supposed to be significantly younger than Romeo. Stuff like that just tells me that our culture, norms and society are fluid in their acceptance of right and wrong and all the way are laced with hypocrisy.

Teenagers of a certain age, whilst not adults, reject their treatment as kids and will almost intentionally make poor decisions and that's part of growing up. Some people will fall short of what society expects of them, but morally I don't agree with the cultural lynching. Maybe I'm only arguing that side of it because, as Scott said, there appears to be way too much protest from people (not #thf, just generally) on this subject.

Have missed all the chat about that babysitter with the 11 year old; can only really echo the comments about the stark difference between treatment of females convicted of these offences versus males.

I wouldn't dispute much of that tbh, but where I would differ with you is on the "people fall for each other" aspect. For a teacher to find themselves in a position where the relationship they have with a pupil is inappropriately personal, even without it leading to running off to Paris (/UVC) etc would take quite seriously unprofessional behaviour. Even apart from that, kids of that age are still incredibly young emotionally; my personal view is that, intentionally or otherwise, any teacher who begins or pursues a relationship with a pupil is guilty of predatory behaviour.

John Oliver had a piece on mental health in the USA last night, which was worth a watch. He made the point I made earlier in the thread, that the vast majority of gun incidents are not carried out by people who have mental health problems, so it's dangerous and not altogether accurate to label mental health as the key issue in gun violence.
