Quite enjoyed this. A collective of town independent retailers have declared themselves as offshore to avoid tax in a bid to encourage the government to close loopholes.

If Steve wants to pay less tax then he will be welcome to run up some losses by investing in a refurb or by giving his staff some shares. Bet all these pricks are paying their staff minimum wage.

Thought you didn't agree with businesses paying unskilled staff decent wages?

Or he could do none of the above and pay less tax anyway.

I can't see a single coffee shop In a village being able to find a suitable tax avoidance scheme involving off shore. If they have they will become very rich very quickly.

Companies like Vodafone, Google etc. get away with it due to size, globaility and having presence in many countries.

There are plenty of ways to lower tax liabilities but most of them involve spending money in the first place.

I think I read that they are getting help setting it all up.

The size of the company is irrelevant, its all about the system you are in. If these people have found a way to do this effectively as a collective then power to them. Sometimes it takes ridiculous abuses of a system for it to change, and this particular case might be far easier to prove and close, possibly providing a precedent for dealing with largerccompanies too.

It's irrelevant to a degree however many of the genuine schemes cannot be applied to small companies - Joe's coffee shop for example may not have £100k to dish out free shares thus reducing the tax burden, Joe may not be able to allow his shares/capital to be tied up for the qualification period, he won't have a parent company in a tax haven that can apply a genuine management charge that won't be challenged.

The schemes do apply to all unfortunately many can only be applied to the large or cash rich.

It's also forgotten about that many of the schemes used to minimise corporation tax can lead to increased tax takes for HMRC elsewhere through personal taxes.

Charlie Sheen apparently

Although I think that is a guess based on him being the biggest shaggers in Hollywood.

Scumbags. Unfair to label Bateman a racist arsehole though.
