Porty after hours. Can't count the number of times I did that when I was young. I assume you joined on the 2nd; pitching wedge?

Like Pete, I played a lot as a junior although never made it to single figures. I found that two issues came into play : physical fatigue around the 14th, and just plain concentration. Simply concentrating on what you were to do for every shot (external factors aside - lie, distance to pin, wind, etc) was beyond me.

I absolutely love battering the ball with a three iron off the tee.

Concentration is probably the thing that destroys my game more than anything. I was playing in the club B championship a few weeks back and for the first few holes my mind was everywhere but my shots. Found myself standing over the ball and my mind was wandering thinking about really stupid stuff. 4 down after 4 with two sixes and a fucking eight and never recovered :facepalm:
Went up the next night and was level par after 7 holes....twat of a game[emoji1]

I think they mean sneaking on the course after the greenskeeper has left and playing for free.

Fairly common on a lot of courses.

The course officially closes at 7.45 but since the sun doesn't set til 10 you can jump on at 8 for a free round.

Gave my clubs away a few years ago cos they were sitting in the shed gathering dust.

Going round the old course in Musselburgh the night with my mate though so will see if the muscle memory is still there.

I love the old course. It's actually quite a test especially the first and fourth holes. The first is possibly one of the toughest par 3's your likely to play anywhere.

Hit the driving range today, then played the 9 hole Melville course then jumped on the Porty 9-holer after it closed. I didn't know that was a thing. I played stinkin.


What do you mean by that? I'm at that stage where instead of raging because I can't hit the ball because I'm not able to, I'm raging because I know I can hit the ball but I'm not. I've gone from being an ignorant learner, to being acutely aware of how far away I am from being competent. Is that what you mean?

Aye. Quite a distance off the tee and a difficult green to get on. Was talking to my mate the night and apparently they've been talking about adding a back 9 for years. Seems like a no brainer when you've got all that perfect land in the lagoons for it. If it was marketed properly as being the actual oldest course in the world they'd be raking it in.

Shanking is usually one of two things. You could be hunching over the ball too much or overswinging. Try straightening up a bit and keep the left arm nice and straight making sure you don't overswing. Might help...

Mate I'm 42 now and I lived down there when I was a lad. They were talking about doing it then.
It's mental to think it's the worlds oldest golf course and people are walking their fucking dogs over it when your playing[emoji1]

I was thrust onto a golf course at the ago of about 8 and have played irregularly ever since. I have never been particularly good.

I am horrendously inconsistent. I can go birdie, par, birdie, quadruple bogey, double bogey, pick up etc. The only way to get any good unless you are naturally talented at it is to play a lot. I just dont have the time or desire to do that.

Play mostly with work now - I would advise anyone to get competent at golf as the amount of 'networking' days I get out of the office is great.

Get buggies when I play with work. Buggies are awesome and make it much more bearable if you're playing shite

Same here. I've played on and off since I was a kid, but in my teenage years lost all will to play competitively. We weren't allowed onto 'the big course' unless it was during a medal, and the medals were always won by these cheating wee shites who always got paired together...dad was club captain etc and they basically always just knocked shots off each others scores all the time, so I lost interest but used to get forced to play when I'd have been happier down the park smoking soapie with my pals.

I can hit a drive for 250 yards, birdie a par 4, then a birdie on the following par 3, before then taking 5 off the tee and going straight into the rough 25 yards away. It used to rile me so much it ruined the rest of the game, but as I've got older, I just enjoy the good shots, and try not to worry about the shite ones. Top advice from Ty Webb on being Zen.

I had a weekend away in Ireland, buggies and all playing on these ridiculous courses, designed by nicklaus and the like - water hazards galore, 5 star hotels attached and all that. Had an amazing time and it got me the bug a wee bit.

I'm too busy to play much though tbh, so it will be an occasional thing, so I'll never get any good.

Carrick-knowe for me, cant better 86, but love the game, think i know my limits.

I just can't be arsed with a game where even the best player in the world can be amazing one day and terrible the next.

It's quite a good pass time as well, but it's a fucking joke of a sport to get any good at.

I love the walk Alan, was putting 12 footers then a 20 footer on the 18th, but shame my middle game is mince.

Was at the driving range earlier. Just back. Not as bad as i though. Was with my brother so he helped with a couple of pointers. Hit 100 balls. Plenty shite ones and duffers, but afew good ones. Will be back

Looking at getting my step-dad a round (for two) at a decent course for his Xmas but not sure where is decent. He's a member of Kingsknowe just now and played most of the St Andrews courses so something a bit different.

Any suggestions?
