Mary from Castlemilk would get done just for associating with someone who made one stupid mistake. Fly with the craws...

Good analysis.

Hopefully some on here read that and reflect on their own prejudices.

On the flip side, getting into Oxford and medical school is a privilege not a right. She should be removed and her place should be given to a non stabbing person.

She's already ruined her chances of a career, who would employ her prison sentence or not?

I've been fucked on quite a few drugs in my time, when something like this happens it's almost always that person and not the drugs. If she's had some psychological trauma (as has been suggested) then fair enough, but that does mean she's mentally unstable and probably unfit to ever carry out the job she's gifted at.

I think what people are annoyed about is this suggestion that she got away with it because the judge didn't want to harm her career, rather than it being a case of psychological issues, which are probably quite a common mitigating factor.

Which is down to the shoddy press reports rather than the full facts.

The story has been spun in such a way as to get people upset based on this girl's background.

Pretty shoddy tbh.

Sure, they've got form when it comes to that. The "Too clever" thing, as suggested in Acey's link, may well be press manipulation and I have no reason to question that. However, it does seem as though the judge himself mentioned the girl's academic background as a mitigating circumstance, which is completely irreverent when he appears convinced that she was suffering from some form of mental ill health.

I don't think you can blame people for questioning if it would be treated the same way were her background different.

TBF most of us have probably stuck a knife in/bottled/batted somebody before during a sesh. It's not really that big a deal.

My thoughts on it don't stem from prejudices.

I just think if you get off your tits and stab someone you probably deserve to go to jail.

Sorry, I should probably not post on my phone as I end up with pretty short posts which don't make myself clear. I would say that a judge jailing someone because of mitigating factors and not jailing someone out of a sense of misguided vengeance, is a good thing. What is going to be served by the girl being sent down?

Anyway the point I was making was that what I did find interesting (about my brief reading of the article) was that the breach of bail was essentially treated as mitigation, as she apologised to the victim. You see so many people in shit because of a breach of bail and it is a serious offence in and of itself.
