Hammer the BTL landlords and something will pop up in its place. People are always brighter than Hector.
Build to rent is becoming the new thing now. Huge in England. Plenty units in Aberdeen and 2,500 new units planned in Edinburgh and Glasgow. They are essentially serviced apartments.
If you want to solve the issue with house prices you need to build more of them – it is simple. Hammering BTLs (who provide a good service for those that can't afford to buy) is tinkering around the edges and not much more. It sounds good from a policy point of view – and it allows people to jjyay at the prospect of them taking a hit but we need to build more houses. Lots, lots more.
Rent controls and going after BTL just hinders investment in this country.
We need a government who will actually sit down and figure out how to do this.
