Both get us nowhere, and miss the point that it's exactly not a case of being "as bad as each other". They're different crimes that may have overlaps but the motivations and mechanisms are entirely different. Just trying to shoot someone down because you think they hate brown people is what lead to our inability to properly address this problem.

If you listen to our parents, paedophiles didn't even exist 30-40 years ago outside Ian Brady. Now we've accepted that a portion of our society has a sexual interest in children, but we still aren't ready to accept the reasons why groups of men from immigrant communities target vulnerable young women. I think that article has it right, they view them as worthless as dogs and are therefore worthy of the same treatment and are deserving of exploitation for the sexual gratification of others.

The part in bold had me chuckling away for some reason. As someone old enough for that age group, paedophiles very much 'existed' in then, for example, I was a young child who wasnt allowed out to play because Robert Black had just snatched and murdered Caroline Hogg, not a far distance away from where we were living. 'Stranger danger' has been a staple to tell kids for the best part of 40 years, only the fear has mostly moved away from dirty old men on street corners to dirty old men grooming on the internet. Brady and Hindley were 20 years previous. My Dad lived in the Manchester area at the time and wasnt allowed out either. Indeed, the 'hysteria' over children being abused/snatched has been around since the Victorian times.

As for the subject topic, I've worked, for around a decade with kids who have been abused. The vast majority are abused, not by your typical 'dirty old paedo' or by gangs of Muslims who groom for their own perverted means. They are abused by those who are closest to them and meant to protect them - their families. That doesnt make headlines though and doesnt further agendas, so moral panics are created to divert attention for where the majority problem lies. That enhances organisational standing (and their funding) for those that want to tackle it (see child trafficking as another example).

Do the stereotypical 'paedos' exist? Yes

Do grooming gangs exist? Yes

Do we have a media willing and able to stir up nonsense with little to back it up? Yes

Do we have interested parties willing and able to pounce on the media reports to justify their existence? Yes

Do we have some overarching problem with both of them? I'm not massively convinced and the evidence base, beyond the headlines, would indicate that as well.

Will we ever 'eradicate paedophilia'? Not likely.

What society really needs to do is have a 'proper' discussion on this, without the whataboutery, whilst realising that the mythical family unit is what needs to be addressed, arguably more than other areas, to reduce the abuse of children.
