Interesting - I've heard it used in that context quite often tbh. Usually by schemies towards people from other schemes they think are worse.

Regardless of what sort of backwards phrases you were brought up using, there's no way anyone is tweeting the phrase 'smelly bogging black bastards' (Clanger ) without knowing exactly what they're doing. She deserves all the abuse she gets.

It's a Fife thing I think, quite often heard tinky folk getting called black bastards when I was younger. Not a term I'd use now because of the different connotations but never had anything to do with race. It's also an easy get out of jail free card for genuine racists to use to try and get away so who fucking knowsJezza

I'm not familiar with the way she used it. Obviously my ma would say you're black when muddy after football etc but that seems to be a different tone.

That's the only way I've heard it used.

My mum and gran used to say we were black as well when we were manky after playing football or that. There is a tone to that though that could easily be misinterpreted, clearly bought in to the whole scottish Twitter patter  and thought she'd get away with it.

That reminds me of being in G years ago and an old boy behind us shouting 'black bastard' when Obua missed a pass or something. When he got pulled up for it he claimed he meant the referee (who wasn't even wearing black IIRC). Should have claimed he was referencing Obua's muddy shorts and he would have got away with it Heh

Tbf I remember my grandad telling me that people used to call the refs black bastards as well. Probably best to retire that shout at the football mind Laugh

Laugh yer granda. Black bastard was used a lot, and not all that long ago. No racist connotation whatsoever!

Its defo a predominantly west coast thing, in my experience. My mum used to say it all the time if I came home from football muddy or that.

Considering your disgraceful sectarian views it doesn't surprise me that your family ticks the racism box too.

Nah they wouldn't call you a black bastard Warnock

Just the use of “black” as an adjective meaning dirty.

Not sure it is west coast, my family's always said it and none of us are associated with the rotten side of the country. Think it's more to do with the mines.

Why do you think that's a west coast thing? Warnock

It's common to be called black if you were dirty. We're trying to figure out if anyone has been called a black bastard for being muddy though Monty Chuckle

Because I've only ever heard it used by West Coasters May Bee

I did say predominantly and not exclusively.
