If you opt in automatically there would be empty seats that could be used all over the place. Not an ideal system but can't see how else you make sure you aren't wasting allocation.

It also allows you to go in the ballot in groups of 4 which is preferable to just trying your luck on your Tod.

Yeah, but how can you sensibly expect people to be able to opt in for games that will (a) take place weeks/months in the future, and (b) are liable to be moved for TV anyway Either way, you'll have folk who can't go - surely it makes more sense to put a system in place (e.g. a reserve list) to manage folk who can't attend. If there are empty seats, it's not the end of the world.
