Keep challenging it, they will have made a mistake if it's that much out. The fucks insisted that there was no way that they could have made a mistake, and rather than the 20 quid pm I had been paying the previous year which resulted in an 80 quid rebate at the end, I ACTUALLY should have been paying around £250pm Warnock All while the boiler was broken Laugh

I just kept at them until eventually they sorted it out.

They are trying to ride you like a Blackpool Donkey VS.

Monthly readings wouldn't result in under billing of anywhere close to that.

They are fucking AT IT and will back down if you take it further and further.

Apologies for this: I'll try not to make a habit of it, I promise, it's just all I have to go on over the past three and a half years Laugh - but if by some miracle any of you ever spend some time in Uruguay (or Argentina actually), don't go in winter whatever you do. It's flipping Baltic. The reason is cold humidity - which just goes straight through your bones like nothing else - and the wind blowing in off the River Plate.

Meanwhile, most buildings have eff all insulation. I was in one of those for my first apartment there. And in July 2012, I got a bill of 9000 pesos (at the time, almost 300 quid) for one month of heating in a 30m squared studio flat.

Even in properly heated newer buildings, in the winter, it's 5000 pesos a month easily. Horrendous. So I dunno what any of you are moaning about frankly. Laugh

Either with these awful gas heaters which stink the place out (I've hated the smell of gas heaters since I was a kid, so not for me), or by sharing. Like almost any country not in the First World, and increasing numbers that are, Uruguay is not a place designed for single people. Huge numbers of the working age population leave for Europe, Australia or the US because the cost of life is so prohibitive - and as a small country, opportunities will never go beyond a certain level.

I know it's a cliche, but it does lend a sense of perspective on life in the UK for most (though nothing like all). The shanty towns that line the edge of Montevideo have to be seen to be believed; and somewhere like Casavalle, image below, isn't even where the really poor live.

And when you realise that on average, Uruguay has the second best quality of life in South America (behind only Chile), it's almost overwhelming how difficult the day-to-day reality is for most. Lesson drawn from my time there? I need massively more savings to do the things I want to do there; I need to save up for several years to buy a property and have the freedom that'll give me, basically.

What's with folk having qualms about taking sick days? I've never seen the problem with pulling one if I'm feeling shite, or just can't be arsed. Got pals that wouldn't take one if they were going through chemo.

It's the cunts who think they are being brave and coming into work when they are not well, then infecting everyone else with their manky germs.

Exactly. Just take the fucking day off. Got one pal that won't even take a holiday. He's sitting on 30 days leave between now and Christmas. Just can't shirk that high school feeling of guilt for not being in.

Why? Never understood that. I did when I worked in service, where if I was off, arranged or not, someone else has to cover me. I get why you wouldn't want to put someone out. But in an office, where no one has to pick up your slack, why wouldn't you take time off?
