Not everything that appears on the big screen has to be Ozu or Hitchcock. Not all cinema is art, in truth very little that finds its way into the multiplexes qualifies for that label. What matters most, to me, when I visit Cineworld, Omni, Vue and the likes is two things; is this well made and am I enjoying it?
The Force Awakens was well made and only the most curmudgeonly of curmudgeons wouldn't have enjoyed it. The chatter about it being a reboot or even a remake is of absolutely no consequence, it's the sort of thing people say in order to pass themselves off as cinephiles.
A film worthy of ire and irritation would be "mother!", that really was a joyless, pretentious, worthless, preachy pile of tosh. A good test for finding out whether or not the person you are talking to actually cares about film or not though...if they liked mother! but can moan about something delightfully frothy like The Force Awakens then make your excuses and leave their company.
The Last Jedi looks like it will be huge fun too...i can't wait.
