Japan aren't better now than they were then, and that was still a massive upset at the time. South Africa and Scotland are both significantly better than they were then. There's nothing to suggest Japan will finish above Scotland, who beat them at the last World Cup making Shaun's point about them beating South Africa utterly pointless.

They massively raised their game in a one off against a side who underestimated them. But they couldn't do it in a far more winnable game against Scotland.
