About 7 yrs ago I was still playing basketball twice a week and indoor soccer once (+ coaching twice, which usually involved a fair amount of running around albeit without the intensity of a game) a week for anywhere up to two hours per session. After near on 15 yrs of that kind of schedule I started getting lower back pain, mainly after the basketball so to compensate I'd just stop playing after about an hour. I didn't need to really cut back on the number of sessions and for the most part the pain wouldn't be an issue beyond the usual stiffness you'd get the next day. For me anyway, the key was understanding I had 60-odd minutes to do my stuff, or when I started feeling the lower back pain coming on was the signal to call it a night.
Anyway, I think Rory, based on what you've described: 3/4 games a week, you are probably doing too much. It's impressive but as you say, disabling yourself is probably not a particularly useful long-term strategy to pursue.
