For such a generic plot though, why not just make something similar but write it specifically for a new female character?

That's my point as well, Morph - it's the same with the black/female Bond chat. Why be tokenistic? Is it really impossible to build a franchise around a character who isn't a white guy? Actually, don't answer that, I already know Snake

I really liked that Haywire film Soderbergh made with Gina Carano, or at least the concept of it. The script/story wasn't brilliant, and she wasn't the best actress in the world, but she was a cool as fuck action lead and it was great to see a film where the lead was an attractive woman who wasn't defined by her looks. Something could have been done With that character, but it seems to have been a one off.
