...but mainly I think Ben Affleck is brilliant so I wish he would stop pissing about with kids films and get back to proper films like Argo and Gone Girl

Of course it's impacting on the range of films being made and released There are only a certain number of major film studios, and they can only finance/promote a finite number of releases each year. The saturation of superhero movies means that other projects are competing for fewer spots at the table. No different to some other eras, though, like when swords and sandals epics or war epics were all the rage.I actually really enjoy the majority of them, so it doesn't bother me, and there is always the argument that the profits they make will trickle down to fund other projects (/Osborneeconomics). The point where folk get sick of them is definitely coming though, they've managed to keep it up for an impressive period already and that's mainly due to the quality of the films they're churning out, but they've already rebooted Spider-Man just a decade after the Sam Raimi ones, which goes to show the ideas well is running drier.

As for the others it was always the plan to make an Avengers film so they decided to introduce them all individually rather than throwing them all in together then try to fit in each back story. Not a fan of Superman and most of the DC characters outside of Batman and can see this and the following Justice League being fucking disasters.

Went to a wedding once where the table plans etc were all superhero themed. Never mentioned anything to do with comics before but now proudly self identify as geeks. Fucking cunts!

Roger was no doubt the guy who was defending all the Alien Vs Predator movies.

Totally agree with the point about movies becoming extended trailers for the next movie. It is commercialism run rampant, in an industry which was always all commercialism.

Yet you haven't even seen Guardians of the Galaxy? I'm not even sure how you're forming your opinions at this point. The teenage dystopia genre of books is one that's been adapted pretty regularly at the moment.

If GotG had come out 10 years ago, it would have been quite exciting and I probably would have gone to see it at the cinema. Today though the superhero thing has been done to death to the extent that I've had a DVD of it in my flat since New Year and haven't even bothered watching it.

There's a great Kermode article about the economics of Summer Blockbusters and how, barring the biggest flops, they all turn a profit. They are as safe as they are inane and comic book movies are the same. Put simply, they've already ripped the arse out of what is actually a niche and it gets to the point that the artistic reason for their being - the realization of a comic as a movie - is superseded by the need to make standard summer blockbusters for people who would be as happy watching Cowboys and Aliens or Battleship as they are watching Thor 7:Thor Buys Some Pineapple Chunks.
Meanwhile the ability to make good comic book films for comic book fans falls by the wayside. (04-18-2015, 12:29 PM)Sterling Archer Wrote: This illustrates how ridiculous it's become. Cant wait for the new Mad Max. |
