I'd forgotten that Ricardas Beniusis got 45 minutes of this game. ![]() Half an hour against Thuram, arguably one of the best defenders of all time.

Like you say Madrid could be in bother. From the names you've mentioned Pochettino and Blanc possibly. Zidane with Hierro as assistant? I genuinely think if Michael Laudrup had made a better job of his time at and after Swansea he would have had a shout. Someone like Mijatovic? Although now I'm just naming folk with a Madrid connection  Michel is doing well at Marseille though, wee outside bet? Question is whether the Madrid fans will be willing to accept anything less than a big name. But with a big name comes the expectation of instant success. They might be more inclined to give someone like Zidane, Mijatovic, Michel more time to build something. Possibly not though, the Madrid fans and board are arseholes.

Agree with you about Pep, Bert. So far, he's managed two of the greatest names in the game. It might well be his plan to manage a third. Certainly, he's open to being made an offer he can't refuse by United or even Arsenal before he signs on the dotted line for City.
On Madrid, while things could spiral out of control there very fast, I think the change is most likely to come in the summer. Zidane is clear favourite; Mourinho can't be ruled out.

Can't remember who it was that was saying his long term plan ideally was Man Utd after Bayern then to take Brazil to the 2022 World Cup. Obviously money talks though. Although City don't have the same history in the game as a Barcelona, Bayern, or Utd, does that mean anything anymore? Plus, City are building something; unlike Chelsea who seem happy to concentrate fully on their first team. Turning City's academy into something to rival Barcelona's as well as turning City's first team from European wannabes into genuine big guns might be something that attracts him. It's City or United for me. Chelsea doesn't seem like the sort of fit for him at all. I don't think Madrid will go back for Mourinho either. They should, but I don't think they're dickhead fans would tolerate it. Especially after not wanting Benitez. Paulo Sousa from Fiorentina? AC Milan are the other team who could be on the lookout come the summer. 10th last season, 6th currently. Probably too much of a long term project for Mourinho to consider.

The assumptions over City are mostly because he already knows Txiki Begiristain from their time at Barcelona. What's interesting about Pep, though, is as well as being so innovative, he's a traditionalist. I think club histories and pedigrees do mean something to him in a way they don't to other managers. Or rather, he's the only manager in the game in a position to choose wherever he goes. Chelsea's a complete non-runner as I think they already know; I do think there's a glimmer of a chance re: Arsenal, but it's about 60-40 City-United beyond that. I absolutely don't think Madrid should bring Mourinho back. They have no long term plan, no clear identity, and a sensible club would look forwards, not back. He can hardly go to Milan though: his life wouldn't be worth living among scorned Inter supporters, and besides, Milan have too many problems. If he returned to Italy, it'd be to Juve or, more likely, back to Inter, purely because the latter are reviving at last, albeit way off the leading pace in European terms. The rivalry between Pep and Jose is almost too good to be true in some respects. They're such opposites - but at the same time, both very sensitive, thin skinned, hugely driven men. Because Guardiola keeps being given the chance to build legacies and establish dynasties at the world's leading clubs, Mourinho must genuinely resent as well as be fascinated by him. They're both mercenaries - yet Pep's public image (very much the Pele to Mourinho's Maradona) means he's viewed as the opposite. That Brazil plan of his? It's fabulous. If anyone could turn around the game's most celebrated national team (and sort out many of the underlying structural problems which have caused its demise), it's him. PS. Two other managers worth mentioning in passing. On what he's done at Watford, I see no reason why Quique Flores shouldn't be snapped up by a leading European club in the summer. His CV was already very impressive even before this. Also, when will Unai Emery be given a chance by one of the European game's giants? He gets such rave reviews, but has never really been at a club capable of winning much. |
