Is it just me or does Gerrard not seem wildly overrated as a manager?

Going through the season unbeaten was obviously a big deal, but one trophy in three seasons at Rangers isn't exactly stunning.

I thought he would be a dud at Rangers to be fair, but you could see the progress they were making year after year. 
Not something you could see with Neilson.

Time will tell, there's a wee undercurrent of the boy Ian Beale being the brains behind the operation though. I think Gerrard done well enough at Rangers and obviously his name carries a bit of weight but it's sink or swim at Villa whether his next job is Liverpool or Nottingham Forest in the championship.

He's a decent manager, but he also gains respect because he's a winner, he's been there and done it at the highest level and demands the best.

Respect goes a long way at a football club. 
If you're a wee diddy manager that hasn't done all that much as a player, good players aren't going to respect you, unless you're an angry mother fucker.

You hear this thing about the assistant being the brains behind most good managers.

Trophy wise not impressive but they were really dire before he came in and he turned them into a solid European outfit and the best team in Scotland. Fair play he's done a very good job. Dean Smith was kicking about mid table for Brentford before going to Villa.

I can't put my finger on it but it feels like he depends on the name he made as a player an awful lot rather than his management skills but that's a complete guess.

I wouldn't say overated. After all it's just the Aston Villa job. Dean Smith, Steve Bruce, Paul Lambert etc... hardly a big deal. Although I realise they have money now.

The English press are excited because he is good copy. Ex England/liverpool captain etc..

I think he's made the right decision.

If his name wasn't Steven Gerrard and they weren't under massive financial pressure due to covid, would he even have been given last season?

They were excellent last year against no opposition but over the piece of 3.5 years it's hard to rate him much more than decent to good. Not that convinced by him in the transfer marker either and it's not like he's left a brilliant situation for the next manager to walk into.

I said the other day if he stayed and won the league for the next two years he'd walk into the Liverpool gig. I actually wonder if this is a negative move because he knows they've gone backwards this year and winning the league every year is no longer the gimme it should have been.

Sometimes it's as simple as getting a name that players respect. Doesn't have to be rocket science.

Make sure you get clever people around you to do the spade work and you're on to a winner.

There's multiple   there's one above the door as well. I'm sure they have a picture of the queen on their team bus as well
