It's written by an American that has no concept of how huge "soccer" is.
US women's soccer and Mens soccer is comparable in America in terms of participation and to an extent popularity. While it can seem to be reasonable in the states, i'm sure they would similarly laugh if some europeans said that the superbowl and the women's superbowl* should receive the same prize monies. *not sure if the women's superbowl exists - probably doesn't.

They'll end up getting similar money through fear of offending.
Happened in tennis as well. They get the exact same money despite playing less sets with less quality.
