You've got the Picture House about 30 seconds away, so probably not a Wetherspoon this time.

Quite strongly suspect people will go big on 'Blitz spirit' until it actually happens, then those exact people will be the biggest babies about the whole situation.

Isn't that kind of the whole point of protesting?
Doing it the "right" way = being ignored. I'm guessing it's over the corporate sponsorship of the gallery, and Credit Suisse are heavily invested in fossil fuels.

I don't think it's to do with the sponsorship because they've done other galleries as well, they just target high profile pieces of art. Obviously sympathetic with the cause but can't get on board with stuff that could permanently damage priceless paintings and that tbh. Apparently they done it knowing that it had glass over it and would just cause a scene.

Think the idea is that we lose our shit over destroying (and, as Morph says, it's covered in glass anyway) an artwork but not over the fact we're destroying our whole planet. Some painted flowers vs the whole ecosystem.
There is a line between the idea that traditional polite methods, and civility, clearly haven't worked and the problem of direct action potentially alienating people. I think this is fine, though - isn't the usual criticism that they 'stop ordinary working-class people from getting to work'? Seems going after an art gallery avoids exactly that.

I understand their reasoning but I don't know what they're hoping to achieve. They go in, make their point, people hear and see them....then what? Willing to bet good money that nobody in that art gallery can do anything about a global economy addicted to burning fossil fuels. 89 year old Elsie Doublebarrelled-Surname probably doesn't have the Koch brothers on speed dial.

Yeah, I guess that's a fair criticism - can't really claim to be raising awareness as it's not like anyone doesn't know at this stage. No-one's looking at that like 'hang on, there's a climate crisis? Oh no, seems bad'
It's just the 'disruption' argument that I don't buy, I suppose. Also, while I agree that this doesn't achieve anything, it's not like I have a constructive suggestion for what they could do that would have that impact.

No-one's looking at that like 'hang on, there's a climate crisis? Oh no, seems bad' I'm no for destroying things of cultural significance to push these points tbh, I know the painting was protected but could inspire similar activism that then ruins something else that doesn't have the same protection as the Van Gogh. All a bit too ISIS for me ![]() Something worth looking at is “just stop oil†and these other radical groups are funded by the climate emergency fund. It's a bit of a conspiracy theory this but the person who funds the CEF is Aileen Getty who is from one of these big oil baron families. Maybe she really is a climate activist and believes this is the best way to get the message across, but it also conveniently paints a picture that anti oil protestors and activists are all fucking bams and hurts the movement as well. I'm not one of these people who are like “you wear shoes that have used petrol to create so you're a hypocrite!!†but there is something to be said about using the money from an oil fortune to campaign against oil. The fund was only set up in 2019 so it's not like this is a young woman who has splintered from her family, she's reaped the benefits of oil and is now a pensioner. Fuck knows it's something to think about regardless, bit of a coincidence where the cash is coming from and the fact that is is radical activism groups they fund. With this one specifically no one seems to actually be talking about the point of the oil, just that 2 wee idiots threw soup at a painting.
