I think people are surprised that someone who has just battered someone to death and trying to conceal it is walking into a shop and brazenly asking for the best blood removal product.

It's not clear but it sounds to me like the guy when he was doing this didn't know he had been linked to the case and probably wasn't expecting too.

It seems an eye witness, CCTV or something sent the police to his door at which point he tried to bluff it as much as he can with an implausible story but given the police had shown up at his door whether he had co-operated or not it was only a matter of time before the evidence fell into place
