Just started watching the US one and finding it hilarious. You're second paragraph is spot on, they've taken 4 poor comedians and put them together and it just completely misses the best aspect of the US one.

It's popular, but it's on a shitty channel so there's always gonna be folk that have no idea who they are.

They also film the majority of it in new york city, so there's a constant stream of people to be had. I'm sure it'll become harder as years go by, but i doubt they'll ever struggle.

It is in a way though, because the hilarity would come from the member of public being completely oblivious to the fact that they're being 'pranked' and your mate making an arse of himself but they clearly know something is up every time and they just laugh really loud and hard to cover up that it's not remotely funny and you're just basically laughing at guys laughing.
