Republicans lining up to defend torture and complain that the report is partisan.

Not enough facepalms in the world suitable for that shower.

She starts by employing her own biased view of the world - "all war is wrong, waaah" - then implicitly holds the US as well as Russia culpable. Because, well, that's what she does.

if she had real integrity about her, she wouldn't be working for a pishy propaganda station. And the worst thing of all about this clip is she claims to exercise her independence - "look at me, look at how independent I'm being" - then couches it in all sorts of ways to avoid getting fired.

She makes the story about herself, not the story. That's pathetic.

Your views on her and Brand are quite bizarre tbh. What is it you expect from them? Absolute perfection? She's got a pretty sweet wee set up there so if she plays the game well enough, she has quite a decent platform to air her views. What is the alternative? Win the lottery and set up her own network so she can say EXACTLY what she wants?

The job of a credible journalist is not to "air their views". Nor is it to serve as a lackey and paid shill of a regime so appalling it makes the one she's always slagging off look like a tea party.

The job of a credible journalist is to report the news impartially and objectively. Abby Martin fails that test on pretty much every single count.

Pretty much every news reporter fails to report news impartially because they're told what to say by an autocue from the station.

Does that make every news reporter shit?

I think her role is to report the news in a way the mainstream media don't.

She does that pretty well, whether you agree with her or not.

Some of her stuff is ridiculous and extreme, some of it is pretty good and gets you thinking. You had her down as some Russian propaganda machine which she clearly isn't.

In very many cases, yes. In others, it's a question of whether the station or programme is credible and impartial - and is also up to the journalist themselves not to give their fiat to propagandist rubbish with an agenda.

A good journalist analyses the facts, then bases their opinion upon them. Journalists like Abby Martin fit the facts around already pre-conceived opinions.

RT hired her because:

1. She's eye candy

2. She's a liberal leftie prepared to slag off close to everything her own country does, yet apply an enormously less critical eye to most things Russia does

She wouldn't have the job had she not met both of those requirements.

What station or programme is truly impartial? I can't think of a single one.

Don't say the BBC.

But that's the thing: about both her and Brand. "Oooh, they're so brave! They're so daring! They don't do what the MSM tells them to do!"

99% of the time, Martin does what The Kremlin tells her to do. Interested in human rights, is she? So I take it she's investigated Russian policy and treatment of the local people in Chechnya or the Caucuses? Or Russia's deplorable treatment of homosexuals? Or perhaps most of all, given her job an'all, the Russian authorities' attitude towards journalists?

'Course she's not. That's not her remit. Her remit is anti-Americanism: exposing the neo-cons, the Bilderbergs, the great big international conspiracy controlling all of us, apparently.  Rolleyes Oh, and making Mother Russia look all soft and fuzzy in the process. In terms of muddying the waters and furthering Putin's cause, as well as Russian soft power, RT is a brilliant idea - but in a comparison between it and the MSM, two wrongs don't make a right.

Don't say the BBC.

Newspaper: FT

International news station: Al-Jazeera comes closest I think - albeit not about Qatar.

British news programmes: Newsnight or Channel 4 News. Both have obvious editorial lines; neither allow these to compromise their essential integrity and in-depth scrutiny of whatever issue you can think of. And true, Newsnight's had a fair few scandals in recent years; it's still a magnificent news programme, though.

The thing about RT, though, is unlike many US TV stations or British newspapers, it pretends to be impartial. It's not. It's as agenda-driven as FOX News.
