When I was young I'd often get a leathering from my dad. Either a slipper or his hand.

Every single time it was deserved. I got at least 4 times as many as my brother as he wasn't a little cunt like me.

Where we grew up we'd know when someone was going to get a leathering off their dad and the rest of us would sit outside and listen to their screams.  

I didn't hit my daughter as she was mostly well behaved but any time she wasn't grounding her was effective.

There's been a huge shift in opinion though in the last thirty years.

I'm not sure how old you are or how long you've been a lawyer, but going on someone my age, when I was a kid growing up in the 80s, I'd say it was almost universally accepted that parents would smack their kids.

Bearing in mind corporal punishment was only outlawed in British schools in 1986, I don't think you'd have to go too much further back to find it was a fairly regular things for kids to get the slipper, the belt etc. from their parents at home.

Loathe to use the phrase, but as a parent I now can't understand how my mum could hit me with a stick. But then my 85 year old Grandad doesn't understand why it's not OK to say things like "***** brown".

I think there's a massive difference between people aged 30+ on here telling stories of being hit with something and people from post 2005* expecting to get away with it. Unless of course you're talking about historical allegations.

I'm 29, so will be in my 30s soon enough.

The cases I'm referring to weren't historical ones btw - just parents hitting their kids with things. It's the ritualistic element of some of it that creeps me out a bit.
