Monty Ooh Was only a matter of time, wasn't it? I'm not the biggest rugger fan in the world, but it does seem like the modern game demands 30 massive guys absolutely smashing into each other over very short distances in a war of attrition, as opposed to running with the ball.

And if you remember Laugh Eek the game didn't really used to be like that; it was far more gentlemanly in the tackling stakes, like proper round the legs tackles. Of course you'd get a bump in the head now and again but only really since it became professional has it changed to smash the cunt rugby league ish!

Might be forced to change the rules to align it back more to the way it was. GodIsGod Bores me now. Fat Cunt

All changed when it became professional tbh.

Horrible reading that.

I like watching 6 nations and the World Cup but as a spectator sport (ie going to games), it's shite.

All of the action is in the breakdown and you can't tell what's happening most of the time. Watching on TV 100 times better.

Football isn't much better tbh, the number of players getting diagnosed with dementia and MND is getting silly. More needs done in both sports.

Always felt they should really be padded up like the nfl. Admittedly I think I've watched maybe 4 hours of rugby combined in my entire life but it seems mental that they're just smashing into each other with no protection other than a gumshield.

Anybody that has played rugby and doesn't know what's happening when they get a blow to the head during a tackle, followed by 'stars' and then aheadache later after the game is simply being naive, or they don't/didn't want to accept that they were causing themselves harm. It's been know for a very long time to anybody that wasn't plain dumb. When you're earning money from it I'm sure its a very difficult decision to make/accept, however, to call it quits that is.

You reckon Steve Thompson thought there was a risk of dementia at 43? Come on pondy.

There's risks aye, same with every physical activity, but not many would have expected this to become fairly common.

Totally dismissing the fact that with the culture and way players were coached, in this and similar contact sports, players were to 'get on with it' and 'man up'. Plenty evidence that doctors and other medical staff were sending players back out, despite reporting symptoms, because they felt pressurised by teams as well.

Dementia? No but anybody with any sense, if you're taking regular blows, and I can assure you it gets worse the more of them you get, knows it isn't going to do you any good in the long term. I assume he started getting these types of injuries probably from about 14/15 yrs of age, unless he was a big cunt then and dishing out the knocks to others. Dunno. Jezza

Anyway, the authorities I'm sure did know, adn should have done something about it a very long time ago. What I'm not sure tbh. Assume they've got something on the go now?

And that's why I alluded to the professional game at the end of my post. At the end of the day you still need to make a personal decision about whether you want to take the risk. I suspecty this is how the authorities have managed to wash their hands of it to a certain extent.

'Washing their hands' is denying their liability that they knew this went on. The NFL ended up settling out of court because of it. The NHL are flapping about just now for the same reason. You can 'whether you want to take the risk' but if the medical advice is 'you're fine' (despite knowing to the contrary), you'll think there's low risk.

If you havent read 'League of Denial', then I'd recommend it. Far more complicated than 'the players knew the risks'.

Ohh. I think I made it clear that I still blame the authorities for not acting on it but if you're on the inside so-to-speak, and by that I mean play the game know what's going on in the sport, and still realise that they're (the authorities) not taking it seriously then you probably still have to take that very hard personal decision about what's good for your health. If you lay there on your bed that afternoon/evening after a morning game and your head is screaming and your room is spinning after you've tried to get up for a piss, and had to lie down again, then it really does start to become obvious that those knocks ain't good.

But again, when it's the sport you love and you're getting paid for it I'm sure it can be a right dilemma.

Guy down this way broke his neck when a scrum collapsed. In their haste to get on with the game they moved him off the pitch. I know a member of his family and he says it was the moving him that caused the major damage. He's paralysed from the neck down. Was over 30 years ago but its much the same as the 'get up and get on with it'.

Luckily there's no good evidence on this forum that getting hit in the head a lot turns you into a total dribbling idiot.
