He’s not like these other young players who go and hide in games, he’s steps up and is aggressive out of position, he is good in possession and is confident trying to play through. His issues come with the final ball.

He needs to kick on soon but it’s over the top to say he has nothing a player and isn’t good enough. If he improves his finishing he’s suddenly a very good player by our leagues standards so that has to be the focus for him.

It sounds mad but the problem with Vargas is none of his good attributes are related to footballing ability He’s quick, got a great engine and works pretty hard. Unfortunately he’s lacking when it comes to shooting, passing, crossing, decision-making or composure.

Seems to me like he’s struggling badly with his new role in the squad. Last year he was a complete punt on loan who had no expectations and contributed more than we probably thought he would. Great. This year he’s come back as a guy we’ve paid a decent fee for and given a long term deal on good money to be an important first team player. The performance he put in yesterday is completely unacceptable in that context.

He’s got attributes that can be effective in this league. It might just take the right manager and coaching staff to get something out of him. I don’t think he’s a complete write off with no chance of improvement in the same way as your Forrest’s and Mckays.

Needs a decent spell on the bench though. Worth remembering he played right through the summer as well.
