Trolled into oblivion by the fact this is happening on the ice cream thread. Suspect deliberate plot.

I can assure you that I wasn't having a pop at the popsicles; I was having a pop solely at you. Cool

Oh, in that case I feel bad for taking this thread off topic and into a realm that's made you seethe your face off Zlat

Anyone tried this? Looks pretty tasty at 2g of carbs per serving.

Most low carbers I've known have been dubious about net carbs. The actual carb count will be higher, but they're subtracting fibre and sugar alcohols.

I've not been doing any of this net carb calculation stuff, just counting carbs as carbs. What's the purpose of calculating net carbs, in language a cretin can understand?

It's not something I've done a huge amount of reading on, tbh: I've never followed a low carb diet, so the incentive hasn't been there.  The idea is that carbs from fibre and sugar alcohols aren't 'real' carbs and should be subtracted as unlike other carbs they don't contain 4 calories/gram.  The problem is that although this is true (or alternatively you need to expend significantly more energy to digest them) they also aren't calorie free: different types of fibre vary between 1.5-2.5kcal/g IIRC and there's a vaguely similar range with sugar alcohols.  Typically the actual calorie counts on food take this into account so it doesn't really matter, but it becomes an issue if you're shooting to be below a certain amount of carbs.

I've made my opinion on low-carb diets clear enough times, and based on that opinion if calories are in check I still don't think it matters.  Having said that, if your aim is low carbs then I think it's more accurate to use overall carbs than net carbs.  Alternatively if you want to use net carbs you should use them all the time with everything.

Edit: as I said, this isn't something I've done masses of reading on and what I did do was a while ago. I might have got some details wrong here, but I certainly remember thinking from the little reading that I did do that quite apart from being based upon dubious science it just seemed like micro-management taken to the nth degree.

See, when I read this being discussed elsewhere, it just struck me as people who wanted to cheat excusing themselves for having more carby food (I get that it's not just completely made up, but anyone "not counting" something in their diet is generally, in my experience, cheating). That's why I ignored it and just consider a gram of carbs as a gram of carbs regardless.

The main reason I've been sticking with the 24g or so a day is because ketosis is making sticking under my daily calorie target very easy, much easier than it would be with a higher carb diet. I'm finding it very difficult to over-eat tbh. Went to Nando's last weekend before the Hamilton game, thinking I'd have a few drinks and a nice lunch, take the day off after a fascist fortnight and a half. Really struggled to get through the pitta and a beer, the starch was brutal to get over Laugh

Personally I do get the feeling that that's what a lot of the net carb crowd are doing. They've become convinced that they need to eat low carb diets to lose weight but can't hack doing it, so they try to find ways to eat carbs while still telling themselves they aren't eating carbs rather than just accepting that a low carb approach isn't for them. Most people I've known who've responded well to low carbs have adapted pretty quickly and not felt the need to try to find justifications to sneak things into their diet.

Begbie, are you still having a drink? Or are you off the beers?
