Who knows. I don't think the Tories, SNP or Scottish Labour will know how to deal with this. The first PMQs will be interesting.

If he manages to sort Labour out this will affect the SNP. The main reason they won so many seats was because Labour were a shambles, a lot of people will go back to Labour if he delivers.

Can't wait till he tears Dave a new one jjay

Quite an interesting statement from Sturgeon:

Commenting on the result of the Labour Party leadership contest, SNP leader and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:

"We congratulate Jeremy Corbyn on his victory and hope that we can work constructively with him in a progressive alliance against Tory austerity. We also call on him to give an early commitment that Labour MPs will join the SNP in voting against the £100 billion renewal of Trident.

“However, the reality today is that at a time when the country needs strong opposition to the Tories, Jeremy Corbyn leads a deeply, and very bitterly, divided party. Indeed, if Labour cannot quickly demonstrate that they have a credible chance of winning the next UK general election, many more people in Scotland are likely to conclude that independence is the only alternative to continued Tory government.

“In the meantime, it is clearer than ever that the only credible and united opposition to the Tories, north and south of the border, is the SNP."

Hedging her bets that this all goes tits up and the SNP can push for a referendum post 2020

It will be interesting to see tye public reaction to this. The media and the political establishment has been telling the publoc what they think about Corbyn for months now only to be completely rejected. Hopefully that will continue.

I can't believe that people making a career in politics think that 'but she said it would be once in a lifetime' is a valid argument. Mind boggling.

If she is going back on her word that is worth pointing out. The fact that you find that "mind boggling" says a lot for how much trust we have in what politicians say these days.

we won't have a referendum in the next 15 years anyway.

'Once in a generation' is a figure of speech; it was a way of emphasising how rare an opportunity it was, not a promise to give up completely on the SNP's entire raison d'être if they lost the referendum. The idea that continuing to campaign for independence after losing the referendum is 'going back on their word' is patently ridiculous.

A significant constitutional change without the electoral consent of Scotland would make that vow null and void tbf, as would a failure to implement the recommendations of the Smith Commission. A significant and sustained shift in public opinion would also lead to her sticking to that pre-referendum word impeding democracy. Basically, it was a daft thing to say in order to try and win undecided voters over - or at least, a last throw of the dice from Salmond et al. As though they're going to give up their life's work in the event of a vote going against them Laugh

If we get turfed out of the EU I would welcome another referendum and would almost certainly vote yes Eek

Doesn't mean the SNP aren't a bunch of slavers for talking up a second referendum less than a year after the last generational vote. Going by Sturgeon's quotes re Corbyn they are now trying to find any and every reason to go back on the daft "once-in-a-generation" comments. Sadly for them no matter what happens Westminster will hold them to those words.
