When it's put like that it sounds like they're loaded and part of the Eton wankers brigade, etc. BUT in reality anybody over $32K is basically getting done for 40% and the rest. Don't think it's unreasonable to up the tax thresholds if they're going to keep the banding the same. They should however get the truly rich done for more tax (but they , the Tories, won't).

See No 10 leaked a speech yesterday which called Corbyn “an onanist” and now Johnson is saying “an early draft no idea how that got out, wouldn't begin to know how that could happen, waffle, waffle...”

I presume they think this sort of stuff polled well in focus groups. Wiggo

Where are you getting the £32K figure from?

I think in Scotland you only pay the higher rate band (41%) on earnings over £43K. Realistically I would imagine in Scotland this probably only effects the top 10-15% of highest earners in the country.

With regard to the real high earners in the UK. It is kinda pointless to raise income tax much higher than it already is. Studies have been done that show if you raise the Additional Tax Rate (45%) in monetary terms the tax return to HMRC actually goes down.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I actually think the highest earners pay their fair share. For example the top 1% of earners in the UK contribute c.30% of the entire annual income tax return to HMRC. When you take that into account I think it is difficult to argue they don't pull their weight.

Whether the top 1% should be paid some of the obscene amounts they get, I think is definitely up for debate though.

Its the top 0.1% in charge of massive companies that pay scandalously low amounts of tax we should be focusing on. The difference between being a well paid investment banker with a few mil in the bank and what these guys get away with is huge. The Guardian link seems to be about Corporation Tax rather than Income Tax?

But yeah, of course my post was relating to the top 1% who play by the rules and are not actively avoiding tax.

It's 50k in England too and 1% less.

It's irritating working on the same rig and the English lads take home more than you because the 40% tax rate kicks in later for them.

The writing is absolute perfection. Reckon you could watch it a dozen times back to back and it would be different little things that set you off each time you watched it.

We hired a new boy recently who it turns out is a big Thick of It and Alan Partridge fan. The first time one of you drops a reference and you realise you've got a new work patter buddy Jj zing

That's actually a very promising video. Get Tories below 326 seats and a minority Labour administration and second referendum will be secured Quite Good

The more good that comes out of Labour policy and manifesto proposals in the next few weeks, the more I see the election swinging into ant-tory hands. I'm becoming more and more confident it will all fall into place.
