It's a horrible look for the police.

Would need more of a sense of the timeline of events at the vigil to know just how badly they have dealt with it.

Here's something I read last night ... gives a few perspectives on vigil timeline.

Blows my mind that someone senior in the police couldn't have forewarned them not to get involved in that sort of heavy handed approach under any circumstances, the optics are fucking dreadful and is only going to ruin the public's relationship with the police even further.

I'm not even going to start on that cunt Home Secretary and the rest of the government, the general apathy in this country is allowing them to make whatever rules they want to clamp down on all of us.

Not saying people are wrong to be angry, but something does grate about it suddenly being the end of democracy as we know it the minute it happens to middle-class white women Warnock

Same thing with people being surprised when they were turned down permission to protest. You don't ask for permission to protest. Protest by definition is inconvenient for the police.

Not anymore, it won't be. All protests will soon be illegal if they are noisy or cause disruption Rofl

Just to clarify I only mentioned the democracy stuff as morph asked me to comment on posts I made months ago regarding emergency legislation/civil contingencies act.

Important to note the documents state it was permission to hold a vigil not a protest - it should've been granted and the police should've worked with the group to find a solution that minimised public health risk - mainly due to the fact the vigil was for a lassie that was murdered by them. No sensitivity to the context was taken in the decision.

Aye, there's an element of that. With Twitter it seems it's a survival mechanism that has to be employed. I posted it for balance if nothing else, well an element of that anyway.

Social media is an utter scourge, akin to the gun in America. Seems you can assasinate or accidentally shoot yourself in equal measures. Every cunt can have demands their 15mins of fame, and all at the push of a button, can do so multiple times.

It's extremely dangerous. post truth. Monty LewLew

The authorities arent stupid mate. They took a lot of things into consideration.

The fact that the vigile was banded under the "Reclaim The Streets" (which is by definition a resistance movement) as a vehicle for a vigile is the worst possible start. I think there was a lot of people there last night who are just generally frustrated at life at the moment.

Cancelling it was the correct thing to do. I actually read that Sarah Everard's parents stated that people should stay home.

Wasn't aimed at you - I've skim-read most of this and didn't see whatever comments you're referencing here. If I seemed to be calling back to anything you said then it was a coincidence.

I agree completely, but my point was that them obstructing it isn't a surprise - big Extinction Rebellion, 'the police will be on our side if we fill out the right paperwork' vibes from the organisers of this.

Not really a criticism of them as individuals - just hope people will join the dots enough to realise that if a bunch of women with flowers who tried to follow correct procedures were treated this way anyway, maybe the other protest movements getting kettled and hit with truncheons weren't the instigators either (as they've been saying all along).

The argument as to whether the vigil should've went ahead is a difficult one. It would've of course been granted if it wasn't for cornona restrictions. So it's about how we negotiate this contract between societies right to express their will and the states right to ban this based on the pandemic situation. This is a live debate - it's not about authorities being stupid, on the contrary they are rational actors.

I'm letting you know that I think if people are going to go ahead and do it anyway, then it's better to be working with people rather than against them, especially in the sensitive context of one your own murdering the person who the vigil was about.
