White people literally broke into the state buildings with automatic weapons a few weeks ago because they had to watch telly at home and nobody pulled them up on it. And now people that have been shat on for 400 years are tanning in shop windows after being told every other form of protest isn't legitimate and, quelle surprise, they're being told they're still doing it wrong.

Once when walking home as a student I had a polis car roll up by me. I pulled me hood down, it was autumn, and a drunkenly slurred "Can I help you, officer?" They drove off without even replying. This is my experience of police harassment. As a teen on an anti war march we accidently broke in to the american consulate. The police couldn't have been nicer explaining our error. I have no concept of how disenfranchised these people must feel, so good fucking luck to them.

This pretty much nails it. Also worth pointing out that when 'protests turn violent', as a general rule it's less often because protesters suddenly flipped than because there was some form of police provocation. To put it differently, every piece of police misconduct we've seen since the protests began has come when they knew the cameras were rolling - people need to think about what's been going on, and for how long, when the cameras are off.

Also, the people now saying that 'they need to protest peacefully' are largely the same ones who either openly condemned or just ignored earlier, peaceful forms of protest (athletes taking the knee being an example). Most major advances in human rights throughout history have been won following a combination of non-violent forms of protest and civil unrest. The idea that peaceful protest works at all in isolation, let alone that it's the only thing that works, is a myth peddled by the ruling class specifically to discourage civil unrest (witness the appropriation of MLK'S memory and twisting of his legacy - his own children are saying he'd have supported the protests and right wingers are telling them they're wrong).
