Hamilton getting past a rapid Ferrari like it's not there. How the fuck can Bottas not get past an Alpha Tauri which is much slower?

It'll be because he knows he should have been miles away from a podium.

I can't wrap my head around how they can just unlap themselves at a red flag, seems so bizarre to put everybody back on a level playing field

Red flag means that the race has stopped. You can't restart a race with everyone on 1 or 2 laps down. The idea that it is "pish" is weird as 90% of the time F1 is boring as fuck and these red flags that happen once in a blue moon and help to shake things up/reset the pack. This time it benefited Hamilton, but usually it benefits people further down the grid which is good entertainment.

Its not just red flags though. Some safety cars they allow lapped cars to unlap themselves.

I do understand that the public would get lost on who is where and it resets the race so everyone knows whats what but its a free hit for some. Rules are rules though.

It's a welcome variable in the wake of a dangerous race event (whether that is a damage to the armcos or hazardous weather).

Currahee I think you are pre the Drive-to-Survive normie watchers, so you should know better how welcome red flags are for F1 fans, especially when it is a standing start on the grid rather than the dissapointing rolling start we got today.

I do think it should be a standing start restart but I think there's 2 things that stop it. In the past there's been restarts where the guy eventually taking the chequered flag isn't actually the winner. This is maybe partly the reason lapped cars can unlap themselves. Also they probably see the carnage from Indycar and feel a rolling start is safer.

Whats the rules on reversing? I thought it was a black flag if you do. Is there a caveat if its in an unsafe position?

Just checked and its not allowed in the pits.

Michael Massie was considering a standing start today like we had in Monza, but was worried that the barriers hadn't been completely repaired to the same standard -keeping in mind the rainy conditions and the fact the crash was at the fastest part of the track. Perhaps the history of the track played a part in choosing a rolling start.

I know they hadn't decided as the cars left the pits. Perhaps waiting for the safety cars thoughts? Probably a mix of what you say and the drivers input.

Yeah. They will err on the side of standing starts usually as Liberty are trying to improve the entertainment in every aspect. That's also why they've reduced virtual safety cars this year in place of actual safety cars.
