I'm no for destroying things of cultural significance to push these points tbh, I know the painting was protected but could inspire similar activism that then ruins something else that doesn't have the same protection as the Van Gogh.

Something worth looking at is “just stop oil” and these other radical groups are funded by the climate emergency fund.  It's a bit of a conspiracy theory this but the person who funds the CEF is Aileen Getty who is from one of these big oil baron families.  Maybe she really is a climate activist and believes this is the best way to get the message across, but it also conveniently paints a picture that anti oil protestors and activists are all fucking bams and hurts the movement as well.  I'm not one of these people who are like “you wear shoes that have used petrol to create so you're a hypocrite!!” but there is something to be said about using the money from an oil fortune to campaign against oil.  The fund was only set up in 2019 so it's not like this is a young woman who has splintered from her family, she's reaped the benefits of oil and is now a pensioner.

Fuck knows it's something to think about regardless, bit of a coincidence where the cash is coming from and the fact that is is radical activism groups they fund.

With this one specifically no one seems to actually be talking about the point of the oil, just that 2 wee idiots threw soup at a painting.

This is interesting - would need to look into it more to have a proper opinion.

I guess another criticism would be that their monologue re. 'people's lives mattering more than art' was a strange binary to set up given that the arts are also massively under-funded. The problem definitely isn't that we're spending too much on the arts

Have seen it argued that the way so many people are saying 'I support their aims but not their methods' suggests that what they're doing is working, given that fairly recently people weren't even supporting the aims. They do have the advantage of getting these subjects into the media. Not sure how I feel about the tactics tbh.

This is the kind of thing I meant with the art gallery stuff at least not impacting on ordinary people going about their days. This does and is harder to justify for that reason, especially in the context of something like our overuse of dairy, which doesn't get the same kind of intuitive support as, the stuff around fossil fuels, for instance.
