Anybody watch The North Water, currently on the iPlayer, a five-part mini-series predominantly set on a whaling ship off Baffin Island in the mid 19th Century?
Quite enjoyed it, and it's pretty accurate I'd say in terms of the Arctic stuff. I had been looking forward to it as one of my soccer players that I coached (for about 4/5 yrs) had a role in the film. He called me out the blue when he was in Basingstoke last September for three weeks filming. He appears in Episode 5, when he takes out Sumner seal hunting on a dogteam, and towards the end of their trip gives him his a knife, with a polarbear ivory carved handle. Says Aliannait, I'm happy! ![]() I did find it funny when they're all struggling with the seal after Sunmer had harpooned it, that wasn't realistic, unless it was a fully grown male beared seal, which is highly unlikely and if it had been it would have been obvious from the seal hole. Anyway, fairly engrossing bit of drama if you haven't seen it.

Watched the first couple of Squid Game last night, big fan so far
Did you boys watch it dubbed or the original with subtitles? Obviously don't speak a word of Korean so gaining nothing vs what you lose in dialogue through subtitles, but a lot of the dubbed voices are so naff ![]() (09-27-2021, 09:11 PM)Fraggle Wrote: Can't beat a bit of Gordon, Fred and Gino

I watched it dubbed, actually like the voices
![]() I've read conflicting things about it. The subtitles are meant to miss the point of the thing a bit apparently. Class show overall but not sure it's quite worth the hype.

I'm planning on watching it but always prefer subtitles over dubbing and have heard about the subtitles fucking it up. Will wait a while.

Not sure how anyone can watch anything dubbed, especially squid game as the voices do not match the tone of what's going on at all. It's just distracting AF as well when the dialogue doesn't match their faces
The subtitles have been changed, it was basically because they made the yappy woman out to be thick when that wasn't quite what her dialogue said. It doesn't change anything major though but netflix sorted it out anyway. I thought it was class, best thing I've seen in ages. Started watching Alice in borderland but don't really like it as much as Squid game.

I usually can't watched dubbed stuff but the acting is so OTT it seems to work.

the dub wasnt that bad for the first episode but i read the subtitles are closer to the accurate translation? The closed caption is the pish subtitle option apparently but there's two options for subtitles.

Never really watched anything dubbed before tbh but seemed to work quite well for this.

Some Korean speaking American went viral as she was pointing out where the dub was missing the point in some scenes. The loud smoker woman says something about how she's smart she just couldn't afford university and the dub said something about how she isn't the smartest person in the world or something along those lines. There were a couple other scenes that were similar but it was nothing major. Sure they've already amended it though. The red light green light scene sounds so fucking daft with the wee yank school girl saying it instead of the creepy korean lassie in the dubbed version

Was pissing myself sometimes where the old man is just cheesing with that shite accent.

Don't mind watching dubbed stuff tbf, you get over it pretty quickly. 2 eps deep in squid game, planning on smashing more out the night. Watching it with the bird so have to wait until we can watch I together does my tits in that, I just want to watch it all in one sitting.

Used to watch Dragonball Z dubbed into English when I was a kid.

Watched the dubbed version purely because I was watching on my phone while doing other things so couldn't just sit and read the subs while doing it
Didn't take too much away from it for me

I think every single publication in the country has picked up that THE SUBTITLES ARE WRONG story. Getting it pushed at me everywhere. The viral lassie points out one single scene that Morph has described. Personally, it doesn't change a single thing about the show and is a total non story.
I watched it dubbed for the same reason as Groot. I had it on my second screen when working so wanted to be able to follow it whilst I worked but I'd normally watch things like that with subtitles. The voices are pretty naff for a lot of the characters. I got used to the main boy eventually but he sounds like an anime character and at least 10 years younger than the guy's real voice.

She wasn't even watching the right version. She had the closed captions on the Korean one instead of the proper English subtitles |
