Dunkirk
![]() About as much creeping dread and anguish as an afternoon watching Cathro's Hearts but infinitely more enjoyable 9/10

Dunkirk 9/10, absolutely harrowing at points. For a film so little dialogue, absolutely gripped from minute one.
I've listened to some podcasts about the whole operation, but Nolan has managed to nearly somehow encapsulate just how brutal standing on that beach must have been. Nolan should probably make all movies from now on.

One thing that's quite amazing about Dunkirk is you don't see a single nazi in it. Yet the intensity is incredible.

Couple of messerschmitts and heinkels and that's it.
Can you just for a minute think about how fucking scary standing on that mole would have been. Absolutely nowhere to go. I'm no expert, but has to be the single greatest military operation of all time and it was barely a military one at that.

No names, no back story, no explanation about what was going on and why, no really likeable characters, no blood and guts, no visuals of the enemy other than in the air, no churchill.
Just dropped into the action and get what is probably a very accurate experience of it. Unique war film like.

Selma - 8/10
Well told account of the run up to the march from Selma to Montgomery in protest against voter suppression in the south following legal desegragation. The guy playing MLK does a damn fine job, with a few speeches really getting the hair on the back of your neck up. Tim Roth and the guy who was the gaffer in the full monty are also brilliant as LBJ and Wallace. The only big issue I had was Oprah clearly stumped up cash to have this made and plucked the role of the ordinary woman who takes it upon herself to challenge the man and it came across as an example of ego, verging on privilege. Worth a watch on netflix though

Dirty Dancing 6/10
Haven't seen it in decades but it came on Sunday evening and Mrs Mags wanted to watch it. Some terrible acting but outrageous nipple action through a wet t shirt and various dancing outfits pulls it from a 4/10 to a 6/10.

You probably went from a 4 to a 6 anaw mags

Didn't catch this first time round and was very pleasantly surprised. Very decent movie 7/10. Transformers - 1/10. What a mess Alien Covenant - 7/10 - Surprisingly, the plot was a bit ho hum. Scary monsters were good though. I actually preferred Prometheus.

It was discussed earlier in this thread Kash, if you enjoyed the film it's worth going back and reading the chat
basically its Bruce Willis character from unbreakable, there had been talk of an unbreakable trilogy for a few years, and although it's not alluded to until the end scene it's pretty much a sequel as Kevin Wendell is in unbreakable as a young kid and it looks like it's being teed up for them to face off in the next instalment
Couple of decent YouTube vids on it as well

I've seen it before, which is probably why the score is a bit lower - it hasn't aged very well, there are far cleverer movies that have come along since and eclipsed it...still a great movie though.

The Big Sick - 6/10
It's a rom com about a pakistani-american stand up dating a white girl and he has to keep his relationship quiet from his family, who want to arrange his marriage. Anyway, she winds up in a coma and the bulk of the movie is him getting to know her parents. There's a fair few laughs in the first 45 minutes but the lack of decent actors make it slow up and it drags in at 2hrs long. It's still infinitely better than most roms coms, but any of the big laughs are clearly lifted from the lead actors real life stand up.

Saw The Big Sick last week. Didn't enjoy it at all.
As you say it felt picked from his stand up and it was long as fucccckkkkkkkkk. |
