It's as much about body language as anything else IMO. If you're on your phone looking around and unsure of yourself, it will look like you've been stood up. If you look quite happy to be there and just have a periodical browse of the phone, you won't look out of place. Sounds like Chrambo's more of the first one
People probably view a book as more natural but you're far too young to be reading the newspaper in a pub

This is fair. I always take a book. Rarely read it, go on my phone instead. But when there's a book on the table it's clear that I'm there by myself.
I've had a pint on my own once or twice, usually waiting for someone though i did feel a bit of a cunt like, spent pretty much the whole time staring at my phone

Wouldn't carry a book with me out of the house. Wouldn't buy a paper. The thought of folk actually buying a paper is a bit to me. Unless its like the Racing Post or something, or a Sunday.
Dont think there is much wrong with sitting on your phone. Maybe not the entire time for when you walk in to when you leave. But every now and again. Breaking it up with watching whats on the telly, or playing the puggy, or chatting to the bar staff, or other punters. Or just simply sitting staring into space enjoying a bit of peace and quite and a nice cold one
In a restaurant is very, very weird and a very weird feeling tbh. No reason why it should be different, but it just is
I'm fine having a pint on my own if I've been out and about doing stuff on my own, can't say I would leave the house specifically to go to the pub myself. Going to a restaraunt on your own is pretty tragic unless you're on business though. Even then I order room service and sit in chatting to my imaginary internets mates ()

I've went on holiday on my own a few times. Prefer it to having to spend longer than 24hours with my mates. By holiday I mean weekends in Europe and travelling round Cambodia. I couldn't go on a beach holiday or anything on my own, that'd be a bit weird but I enjoy staying in hostels about the continent and meeting new people.
