I had one at piershill about 8 years ago but the council closed them up as no one was really tending to them bar one or two folk, the area that was ring fenced for them now looks like a jungle.

Stone maybe?

That reminds me of something she was watching about some Junkie who'd managed to clean herself up. I wasn't watching and she asked me to guess her age. I went for late 70's. She was 39. Crowe

Friend of mine was killed (along with the pilot and other crew member) Sunday evening in a helicopter crash. RIP. It's no consolation to his family of course but at least he died doing what he loved the most.

Haven't heard anything further on the cause but they had to send out a ground crew to secure the site due to weather conditions. As is typical of the weather at this time of year, helicopter surveying can be extremely dangerous due to whiteout conditions, and thus the pilot can lose the horizon, then you don't know which way is up! I always used to panic whenever it happened to us, and would always shout out to the pilot immediately where I saw a rock, just in case.

It was one of the reasons I quit as my total hours in the air over a ten year period were climbing and as far as I was concerned, my odds shortening. Saw some amazing stuff but at the end of the day it was a a job, and as this incident shows, a dangerous one, which is often forgotten.

Did you used to fly helicopters? Can honestly say I have never and would never set foot inside one, I don't think I would ever regret not getting in a helicopter.

I am also sorry to hear that. you think it's terrible way to go but maybe it's not as bad as having some prolonged illness or that.

Thanks. He knew the dangers and would have probably Vlad Shrug at the thought of moving onto something different because of those risks. His work was his life, and despite us talking about doing something different last Time I was over at his place (I was leaving to move back to the UK) I knew he would still be there running the program.

No, didn't fly helicopters (would love to mind, have only done a few trips in the front passenger seat and it was an amazing buzz), Lewis. Did over 1400 hrs surveying, mainly in Bell 206Ls (Longranger). Fanatastic way to see things, and fortunately our pilot for the majority of those hours was one of the most experienced pilots in North America, in terms of hours flown so I generaly felt very safe. Not the case when I had others flying me around, as a lot of them didn't have the experience of flying in flat Arctic light.

If you get the chance to fly in one, don't pass up the opportunity, you'll love it. On the whole they're very safe. and if they lose power they can still land just as normal, as long as you pick out a decent place to land, no going back up and landing 10 feet over! Monty Oh You

Sorry to hear that mate. They scare the life out of me so kudos to yourself and your friend for getting in those things and flying about frequently.
