The only one I haven't been in is the Meridian.
![]() My gran's flat overlooks the site of the old Dalmeny Bar (she passed on in '92) ... since I've been away I often come back and stay there ... was quite raucous, often spilling out onto the street. Pretty much impossible to get an early night as the bedroom faced teh street; still if you're going to get woken up at least there was a bit of entertainment involved.

All the 'faux outrage' in the papers might lead to workers being treated a bit better

We facilitated the building of a warehouse to create new jobs in Scotland. Is that not a good thing? Disney got a massive helping hand from the British government to make films here.
It has become apparent they treat their workforce poorly and an MP in that article has clearly stated there will be no more grants.

The SNP have played a blinder here. Evidence that they are prepared to back the working man/woman.
Sturgeon is really showing her worth through strong leadership. Theresa May saying nothing about this speaks volumes, imo.

Surely though, this isn't the first instance of amazon treating their staff poorly?
Bit rich to chuck millions at them then act surprised when they haven't got workers rights at the forefront of their business plans.

On balance though you have to say it's a worthwhile subsidy if it creates thousands of jobs. Perhaps they should have stipulated a certain volume would have to come from contracted, rather than agency, employment?

Now we get a bad article in the Mail that goes viral and they decide to do something about it. Nobody is questioning the merit of encouraging companies to set up here. You'd just hope that there's at least some investigation into their practices before they start writing the cheques.

It was the same when we bailed out the banks - then people (politicians) started shitting themselves when they started paying massive bonuses again. If you want to have some control over the practices you sort it before you contract to give them money - not after. |
