The bad police in America that have been caught on tape have poisoned the well for their colleagues. Folk are going to be wary of them when they see these viral videos of black guys getting shot for doing fuck all.

Part of their training to see every interaction with the public as a life-threatening situation, so as soon as they say the magic words 'I feared for my life' they pretty much get away with murder. Soldiers in war zones genuinely have stricter rules governing the use of lethal force than US police in America.

Good move or looking at the wider picture, worrying that big firms can lobby governments over lawmaking?

Business has lobbied a government Wow here's me thinking Brazil relaxing their alcohol laws during the World Cup was just a coincidence.

The tobacco industry destroying people's lives, financial services industry lobbying for conditions of Dickensian levels of inequality and the oil and gas industry killing our planet. Just some examples of big business violently undermining our democracy every single day for decades.

But I draw the line at Netflix's stance on abortion.

Interesting article.

The first part suggests xenophobia is something particularly new, which I don't agree with, but this bit below I believe accurately reflects the UK ín the 2000s and 2010s, something which isn't discussed enough:

When I first came to the UK in 2005, I was viewed as the hard-working Polish migrant. This popular view was linked to the phenomena of a “good [migrant] workers” — celebrated for their work ethics and most importantly, compliance (MacKenzie & Forde, 2009). Compliant, grateful and invisible — the perfect qualities of the working underclass. In fact, the label of a hard-working Pole also became a self-fulfilling prophecy. The process of creating and maintaining a 'good Polish woman' identity at the workplace ( Lee-Treweek, 2014) has also become an important element of my immigrant's story (and led me to a burn-out, but that's another story).

The problem with the Eastern Europan workers began when we become visible and heard (do not confuse with seen and listened to) in British society. Within several years after's Poland joining the EU in 2004, many of us began to search for new opportunities. For some of my friends, this meant leaving their initial workplaces (e.g. factories, hotels) and taking our Eastern European-ness outside the “dirty work” realm. Often this meant getting a new job, going to university or starting up a business. As you'd expect, many decided to buy a property, start a family and/or climb the career ladder. Out of a sudden, we became less-compliant and more visible — our otherness became problematic. As a result of our increased visibility, the mainstream narrative on migration became increasingly negative.

In this new, xeno-racist reality, I was no longer only perceived as a representative of the hard-working Eastern Europan mass but also as one of the 'Polish chancers' who continue to steal jobs, jump queues and claim benefits (all at the same time, of course).

The anti-Polish migrant moral panic in the UK lead to nearly everyone having a view on immigration. Taxi drivers often tell me that Brexit it is not about me personally (I'm the good one) — “it's about the others, who come here and don't work”, they'd say. To my surprise, I'd also learn from some Polish folk that Brexit is not really about Eastern Europan migrants—” it's about the refugees”, they'd say. During Brexit discussion, it sometimes felt as if people around me could not decide who to blame for their sense of unworthiness.

The point about visibility IMO is a good one, though I remember hearing plenty moans about polish workers etc around 2005. I don't know if it it's necessarily about getting better jobs or homes, but see as soon as the polish shops started opening, thats the sort of thing that becomes a lightning rod for racists who then say "the high street isn't what it used to be no more" meanwhile ignoring that the polish baker or grocer has now set up in what was an empty unit for the previous 5 years, and you don't hear the same complaints about the 3 bookies and 2 greggs in the same street.

That ties in with an interesting article i read around the time of the brexit vote about one of the things that drives feelings around race in a lot of these towns is the perception of the pace of change. So a town with 1% immigrants could be perceived as being "overrun" by some voters, on account of a turkish barber, a kebab shops and polish baker opening up in hitherto empty shop units.

All of which ignores the real structural and economic reasons why people feel like this in the first place. Actually disgusted by the dog whistling labour have done on this, some of corbyn's comments on wage suppression and migrant labour for instance.

This is a reality in unskilled labour and skilled labour to a certain extent. It's important not to deny that there has been wage suppression as demand can be satisfied by migrant workers who are prepared to work for fuck all because the money is worth more back home (or at least that was the case when the pound was strong).

Heard this mentioned on the radio this morning .... doesn't surprise me one bit; Porty has basically been ring-fenced with roadworks, and temp traffic lights. As for the rest of the city, probably much the same.

Quote:Murtaja Qureiris, 18, is facing the death penalty – possibly by crucifixion – over charges including anti-government protests, joining a “terrorist organisation”, firing at security forces and making Molotov cocktails which were later thrown at a police station.

Amnesty International said it had confirmed the country's public prosecutor was seeking the death penalty for offences which date back to when Mr Qureiris was just 10 years old.
