Why is the video cut in half? I can't see what's actually going on.

Anyone been reading about this German captain who is being prosecuted in Italy for bringing migrants to shore?
It's being spun a few different ways, one side is saying that shes saving migrants at risk of drowning (shes saved 1000+) and bringing them to shore, but the other is saying she's a criminal/aiding in trafficking. Quite a complex story as you need to have an understanding of maritime law From what I've read it seems it's completely within the law to save someone and drop them off on shore regardless of nationalities and then it's for the authorities to sort out but I'm fairly sure you're meant to return them to the nearest port, think this is where it's getting complicated. In almost all cases it seems like she's picking them up 5/10km away from Libya then sailing 500km to an Italian port. Think the argument is Libya isn't safe and there's no way of proving that the migrants are actually Libyan (think the majority of them aren't) but then think the whole point is to remove the immediate threat of death/drowning rather than try to remove someone from a war zone. The Italians are kicking off as well, mostly because their gvt seems to be far right or whatever just now but they're saying people like her are making the problem worse because now the traffickers just get into international waters, sink the boats then call people like her because they will come to save their lives and guarantee a passage to Europe. It reads as if the Italians have made some sort of effort to intercept these boats and turn them round to where they left, but there's obviously a reason why it's being left to private ships like hers to do the bulk of the work. Some of the attitudes people have towards human life is pretty sickening though ![]() https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=w...0420794535

What's the law though?

It reads as if there's actually nothing in the law about taking them to the nearest port and just to a place of safety. Libya is in the middle of a civil war so not deemed safe.
European captain delivers to the closest European port ![]() Have no doubts that Britain would be pulling the exact same shit as the Italians if we were in the same boat (lol)
