Saw Kansas rejected a ballot measure to adjust the state constitution to ban abortion by a massive margin: https://www.npr.org/sections/2022-live-p...-amendment
That's a pretty big deal since it's a conservative state right smack in the middle of the country. They did everything to game the vote possible but lost due to the sheer weight of numbers against it. Just shows how hugely unpopular overturning Roe v. Wade actually is amongst Americans and how out of touch the Supreme Court is.

Anyone been reading that wee boy Archie's story, I'm sure there was a story like this a few year ago but he is brain dead, think all they can do is turn the machines off at this stage but the parents are trying to prolong it as much as possible.
It's become very messy, the mum has gone on the media circuit to tear through the NHS, she's accusing them of forging MRI scans and the ones that they've submitted to the court aren't his. Canny imagine being in that situation of having to make that call for anyone never mind a child but seems like the wee lad should just be allowed to pass peacefully. The big thing that winds me up about it though, probably a post vaccine/covid thing is how many people think the mum should have the sole responsibility on how her son is treated and not the folk who have trained for however many years to be brain surgeons. Like if she wants to keep him hooked up to the life support forever that's her choice, even if it's terrible for his body and could make him suffer. Fucked up.

Difficult moral question. The reality is that sometimes doctors decisions are based on time constraints, resources, the greater good etc… and not what is right for the individual.
The amount of times doctors don't send people for scans or withhold antibiotics because of resource/money constraints or the greater good of ensuring viruses don't become resistant etc…also doctors withholding necessary mental health referrals because they know the waiting lists are years long so instead give out a wee booklet to go and do mindfulness. Doctors do their best but we live within a violent system that underfunds healthcare and there are many victims and preventable deaths as a result. In this case the doctors are probably right, but I wouldn't trust a healthcare professional over my own judgment all the time because I know their decision making is heavily impacted by an underfunded system where they make directions within a harsh reality. My auntie almost died the other week because of a misdiagnosis that was clearly due to lack of time/resource available to treat her. If it wasn't for my sister being in healthcare also and sending her photos of the issue to a doctor she knows, she would've been fucked. Luckily the doctor said to drive her to the hospital immediately for surgery

If you haven't read the court judgments in this case then I would start there.

I get the impression of someone overwhelmed by sadness and incomprehension at how this has happened, and incomprehension and the system, and legal system, clinging onto whatever crumb of hope there is.
Anyway point being they are trying to challenge this all the way, as far as they can, while also being broken by those challenges, and becoming angry at the method of the challenges. I presume they've been able to get legal aid for it, you wouldn't have seen them go this far if not.

Would be amazed if the LAA in England don't have a "prospects" test like up here. Is it not a combo of that shady "Christian Legal Centre" place and pro bono work that's keeping it afloat?

Really sad story. Did the dad not have a heart attack a few weeks ago as well
Waste of time trying to comment on whats right or wrong. It's an impossible situation and just such a fucking shame.

Aye, it's brutal like. Can't imagine how difficult that would be, especially for a mother.

I've not read the court documents on the case, so my opinion on it only stretches to saying if so many doctors and second opinions and levels of appeal come back saying its effectively hopeless then that's likely the reality.
From personal experience, SPEAKING AS A PARENT OF CHILD WHO WAS IN ICU FOR 105 Days, it's an imperfect system. Medics are responsible to a variety of masters, primary is the child's care but skill and opinion affect that. Notwithstanding the effects of a public health system. It's utterly vital the parents act as advocate for the child, they're best positioned to do so. I wish I was more forceful and spoke up on behalf of my daughter; a mixof being diffident towards authority and 'not wanting to bother the NHS' meant I'd sometimes bite my tongue. You do a crash course in your child's malady, and that's far from perfect but you have to act on their behalf. In this situation that comes up against a series of checks and balances, and you just have to take your place on that greater system. Easy for me to say with two healthy kids I suppose. |
