I struggle in these situations; between wanting the boy put down immediately, and trying to understand why he'd have done it (not all there/abused himself and feeling sorry for him in a way). It's just downright terrible all round. I know very little about the case but if family members 'felt' there was always this possibility they'll be feeling worse than terrible I'd have thought.
