Yeah the systems are much the same. Guardian reporting that 40% of estimates will be downgraded at A Level Crowe

And they can't appeal Monty But

What a shit show. Fair play for fronting up, but I can't see how they get out of this short of upgrading everyone's results who've been downgraded.

Monty Chuckle

And then you've got the issue with those who's uni places were affected as clearing had filled up already by the end of last week. QMU already knocking back requests for students to enrol.

I know of schools where lots of pupils were upgraded by the SQA. What happens to them without causing another massive shit show? Laugh

Surely they have to leave the upgrades in place?

It's the only way they can do it surely. Downgrades reversed, any upgrades left in place.

Sturgeon did say that the onus shouldn't be on the students to appeal - hopefully she tells the schools that as well!

You'd hope. The only sensible thing to do would be to allow promotions and say that anyone at the bottom of the league isn't relegated. There's a global pandemic going on, so it seems incredibly unfair to demote teams whilst there's still points to be won. I'm sure the spfl will see sense and ensure that no handful of teams are left carrying the burden of a global catastrophe.

They will and I think she may have said so today, but they shouldn't.

A) They said that the increase in attainment from using teacher predictions wasn't credible - this will create an even bigger increase.

B) The schools who got upgraded results are affluent - these pupils had their results inflated not based on their work, but based on the postcode they live in. Allowing that to remain in place is allowing the wealthiest kids to keep the unearned advantages they got from this unfair system. Still a huge, class based injustice.

One thing I wasn't sure of, was all of this based on the postcode of the school itself, or postcode of the person sitting the exam, or an aggregate of the postcodes of all pupils at the school?

It's shorthand for the historic attainment of the school. Schools in affluent catchments have high attainment, so they were much more likely to have their estimates unmoderated or upgraded. That's where the poorest ended up disproportionately affected.

My SIMD 1 pupils did really well based on their work throughout the year and had none of their estimates downgraded, for example. I'd predicted a small increase in my rate of As from the last two years (also an increase in the number of fails at Higher), so my estimates were pretty much in line with historic attainment. Meanwhile, subjects in my school that had estimated large increases in their attainment got savaged by the SQA moderation.

I was shown another (much more affluent) school's results vs estimates in one subject, and they had all their D estimates upgraded to Bs and Cs, and all their Cs upgraded to Bs.

How can they bang on about the credibility of the system and all these kids who wouldn't have been bright enough to go to uni when there are kids getting upgraded results as part of this system too Monty Ha

So it's sound for kids to go to uni who wouldn't have usually been able to, as long as it was the SQA's blanket adjustment that put them there and not a teachers estimate based on knowing the pupil Warnock

The important thing to be cognisant of with all of this is that this isn't a failure of the system; this *is* the system.

Every year grade boundaries are shifted to prevent too many kids from succeeding (or failing), in order to protect the “credibility” of the results. That's why you get small increases in attainment most of the time - it's an entirely manipulated process.

Thick rich kids who fucked the prelims would have had tutors to get them through the exam proper, so it's only fair their results are upgraded.
