Stripping citizenships is pretty abhorrent tbh, already said but it's purely done to appease the right wing mob.

A sentiment of being discriminated against, especially when that discrimination is based on disrespect for the rule of law, has been demonstrated by UN research to be a contributing factor to jihadi radicalisation. Recruiters will actively be able to use the line that 'you aren't ever going to be treated as though you really belong, your citizenship is dependent on good behaviour' to recruit the next generation of jihadis.
I don't have any particular sympathy for Shamima Begum as an individual, and in general strongly disagree with the idea that jihadis are 'brainwashed' (although given her age, you could make a strong argument she was groomed). My main issue with this is that it creates a two-tier citizenship system, in which people racialised as Muslim are treated as at best conditonally British - even from a pragmatic point of view, that's likely to contribute to further radicalisation in future (not touching Herzog's implication that the families of jihadis are collectively guilty with a bargepole, sorry). (There is a counter-argument here: Jack Letts. But I'd argue he's the exception that proves the rule, given that we all know what populations are associated with terrorism in the popular imagination) (02-26-2021, 09:25 PM)Makween Wrote: A sentiment of being discriminated against, especially when that discrimination is based on disrespect for the rule of law, has been demonstrated by UN research to be a contributing factor to jihadi radicalisation. Whoa whoa whoa. Thats English for stop a horse. I simply meant that it may help their family do more to persuade them to stop going if the possibilty they would in all likeliness be able to see them again. If they come back, mission done, serve some time they in all possibilty be inspiring more Muslims to do the same. If it helps deter some people doing this then good. Shes a martyr of sorts in that she is saving other young peoples lives and horrible pain for their families.

Maybe it's not what you mean to say, but you're implying that as things stand Muslim families are just sound with their kids fucking off to die in Syria. Why else would that be the case unless they at least partly agreed with the ideas? Quote:If it helps deter some people doing this then good. Shes a martyr of sorts in that she is saving other young peoples lives and horrible pain for their families A martyr is exactly how recruiters will describe her to other people to persuade them that the West hates Muslims. This is literally the stuff ISIS feed from - they've spoken about it in their own publications. It's actually not wrong that her being back in the UK and in jail presents a risk of her radicalising more people, but she'll do more as a symbol than she could ever do as an individual. I don't want to be a dick about this, but there's been extensive, massively funded research into radicalisation in Europe since 2004, and what you're suggesting here just isn't how it works.

Aye we can do that whole thing and it will be a laugh but why not say why people shouldn't think he might not be guilty or why he should be in jail

Must just have a lot of faith in the justice system I suppose.
