He won the election; he lost the popular vote by more than any other winning candidate in history. Therefore claiming "the population" "lapped it up" isn't really true. The right voters in the right states did. A lot of people who voted for him did. Many more didn't.

And ?

Does it really matter how he speaks if his actions are largely similar to those of the standard politicians before him?

Deportations are actually lower under Trump than Obama. That sort of thing must disappoint his support. You could argue he's your classic politician - lots of failed promises.

On the day of the election, there were 250,055,734 eligible to vote. 62,984,855 of them voted for Trump, ie. about 1 in 4.

Sure don't sound like a lotta lappin' up to me.

1. Obama's number 1 priority was criminals. His number 2 priority, I agree, was unauthorised arrivals from Mexico - yet this didn't stop him calling for an amnesty and route to citizenship. He had no interest in deporting anyone with settled roots in the US and no criminal record, hence his 2014 executive order.

2. The lack of deportations under Trump has mostly been because of breathtaking incompetence, ie. completely unconstitutional executive orders which were successfully challenged in court. Not because he never had any intention of following through on his calls.

Its irrelevant who got more of the popular vote, the campaign wasn't fought on those terms. Like saying well, we had more possession than Partick on Saturday therefore we won Monty But

I broadly accept that. It impacts on his legitimacy though. And any claims that he was ever popular with the electorate will always be demonstrably ridiculous. He won the worst, shittiest race of all time under a deeply flawed system; that's it really.

It's irrelevant if the question is "Who won the 2016 presidential election?". If you want to query whether the american population lapped up his approach, then it's relevant.

That may be the case but the end result is still the same.

I don't buy into this breath of fresh air thing. He's came in full of promises and can't deliver. He is operating within the same boundaries as any career politician. There is no draining of the swamp or tearing down Washington. The only difference with him is he has the potential to start a nuclear war on Twitter.

If the race was on popular vote then he might have fought a different campaign, and in turn won more voters. That wasn't needed though and the fact that he won on the terms of the actual election shows he won over America

Monty Chuckle

Yeah it was probably strategy to lose the popular vote by around 3m m8.

He never had any intention of 'draining the swamp' though - as he himself admitted:

The definition of 'brain dead' is those who cheered him on regardless. But then, many of those supporters see this entire thing as some game. Note how their 'freedom of speech!' arguments about guns and pro-confederacy fanatics disappear straight out of the window when it comes to NFL footballers protesting against police racism and brutality.

It's a game to these people. We won you lost get over it. The idea that politics is supposed to make a real difference in millions of people's lives was lost quite some time ago.
