As much as Clarke has done a good job, I think there being a bit of feel good factor back has made/will make a massive difference. The depressing atmosphere around the national team gradually grew over a period of years, and you could see it filtered through to the players. Not having fans there might even have helped to take the pressure off a bit, and hopefully when fans do get back to games the atmosphere will be a bit more positive.

Just thinking about Northern Ireland under Michael O'Neill, and for all the praise he got, he hardly reinvented the wheel as their manager - just got a settled team that wanted to play together, and the fans behind them. We could genuinely do quite well if we can replicate that.

Having grown up in England with a fiercely patriotic Scottish father (I had no choice but support Hearts and Scotland), i suspect those players in a similar position may almost feel they have something to prove. Not just that it really matters to them, but also to all the fuckers that slagged them relentlessly at school etc.

Not saying that isn't the case for others necessarily, but if they're anything like me, there'll be no doubt how much it properly means to them.

It was the increase from 16 to 24 teams that helped us, not the Nation's League format. If they'd used the Euro 2016 format we'd have been in the play-offs anyway by virtue of finishing 3rd in the qualifying group.

Strachan took us to 4th in his group, while Ireland finished 3rd and won their play-off.
