That's 78 goals in 86 appearances!! And yet Hearts, whose entire squad managed a combined 81 goals in the last 2 league campaigns (76 games) didn't think he was worthy of giving the opportunity.
Aye but he isn't exactly Craig Wighton or Gavin Reilly, is he!?

My bad. I forgot about the 6 milly overspend on the new stand and the dozens of shite signings we've wasted money on. Totally understandable we wouldn't have a hundred grand (much more worthwhile causes like the girls team requiring that sort of figure ) for a cheap goalscorer!

I don't think we're as big a draw to him as you think we are.
I think his point is that we should be able to outbid United for anyone, and he isn't wrong. It sticks in the craw that we've signed every project player Levein has fancied in the last three years, but we won't spend enough to bring Shankland in.
We probably spent a combined 400-500 grand in transfer fees alone on the Fantastic Four of Sean Clare, Gavin Reilly, Craig Wighton and Kenny Anderson just off the top of my head. Our spending of any sort of cash is diabolical.
Its peak Budge era Hearts to spunk that kind of cash on donkeys like them but not break the bank for any proven players.

Washington, Doidge and Main haven't exactly been great alternatives.
Not suggesting you made up this "rumour" but who the hell is coughing up a 400k a year salary with alleged 200k signing on fees at Dundee Utd to sign players?! That sounds absolutely fanciful at best, complete bullshit is more likely. The fact is that Hearts should have been one of the leading options for Shankland given our total lack of a natural goalscorer for years and given the market(s) we work in. That we have signed dross from elsewhere and players that have completely failed from a similar level, though without anything like the goalscoring record would appear to me to have far more to do with the decision than finances. We've wasted a lot of money on numerous players we've had to pay without any contribution for seasons on end or pay off etc - not to sign Shankland looks as bad a mistake as some of those we've brought in!

Imagine the combined wages of the likes of Martin, Oshinawa, Sammon, the Cathro January invasion etc. Easily into 7 figures.

They've just been taken over by a wealthy American. Comes in and chucks some money at it and gets Shankland. It isnt that fanciful a suggestion.
I've mentioned here before that we went in for him at the beginning of last season and decided he wasnt worth what he was asking for and the same this time around (same for Hibs). Considering Levein's lengthy track record on signing shite, I cant fathom why folk would be surprised?

Think it was more that he wanted more than we valued him at?
Imagine we had signed him on £8k a week like Scott appears to be suggesting, and he couldn't make the step up to higher level, or got injured and was a huddy.
Would be seething beyond belief. This place would spontaneously combust.
