Nah, 12 months with the option of another 12, clearly not taking up our option. Made sense to give it a go and better than a Levein 4 year special.

Far from the worst ever players to play for Hearts, but never likely to make a full-time career out of the game.

So they released him now, outside the transfer window meaning he needs to wait till the summer to get a new club?

He's on loan at Arbroath

Nah, he's currently on loan to Arbroath, but they've told him the option for a further 12 months at Hearts won't be taken up, so he's essentially in the shop window at Arbroath until the summer.

Lewis Moore isn't of the standard required. Neither is Euan Henderson.

Academy really isn't producing much 7 years after Administration.

It's been terrible.

Levein and Budge crowed about the youth system throughout this regime, and the best we've got is Irving as a semi-regular and a decent fee for Hickey.

I can't take to that Euan Henderson. I don't see any killer instinct in his eyes.

That's the problem with academy drones in general. No competitive instinct. I think that's why I liked Mchattie, Brad Mackay and Brandon. They liked to kick folk in the air. Cochrane had a bit of that too but was built like a paper bag.

how many months did Hickey spend in our academy before joining first team squad? Not long.

When Motherwell are producing players like Turnbull, Campbell and Hastie on a fraction of the resources it makes you wonder.

As a club we've not produced a striker of note since Scott Crabbe over 30 years ago. That's utterly ridiculous. We've not produced a decent defender since Berra and he's just turned 36.

Our youth development failings predate this regime. But 7 years on from all the proclaims about we were going to produce, not much has happened.

Hickey and funk are good

I think people expect too much from the academy tbf, what club in the world is churning out players every season that are good enough to play in the first team?

Difficult as well when they'll fuck off through to Glasgow at the first whiff of interest as well.

Scott Robinson is a solid spl player, although I'm not sure if we hindered that rather than helped it. We don't need to be producing world beaters, just the odd guy that looks good in the spl would be sufficient for starters. I do like Irving.

That's not enough for folk tho, they want youth players coming in hitting the ground running playing as good as senior pros and if they're not showing something as soon as they get in the team that's enough for a lot of fans to write them off.

Unfortunately the best players in Scotland head west and it's hard to keep players when they start showing something at young ages. There's not really any team in Scotland who is bringing through good players every season, hearts are doing all the right things with these satellite schools trying to identify talent early on and up until Neilson seemed very willing to give youngsters their chance.

A player has to come in and show something and then back that up. It's professional football at the highest level in the country, not an after school club.

Their attempts to revamp the academy have been a complete failure and I'm sure it's something Savage is looking at.

I'm not sure how it compares to other clubs, but these are the players in the last 15 odd years that we've produced that have made a career at championship level or above

Berra
Hamilton
Hickey
Holt
Lithgow
McDonald
McGhee
McHattie
McKay
Nicholson
Paterson
Robinson
L Smith
Wallace
Walker

There's also guys we got rid of because we didn't think they were good enough like Cummings and Greig Stewart
