There was nothing they could do because Perez wasn't there to influence strategy. Exactly same as Hungary. There is no decision today that would've stopped Verstappen finishing 2nd. It was clear immediately that Mercedes had the advantage on the mediums so the best thing they could do was run an alternative strategy and hope for the best.

The only thing that could've made a difference is if Perez wasn't ill on Saturday and qualified in a position that could've blocked off Hamilton's ability to keep coming into the pits for fresh tyres to put the heat on Max.

Catalunya is a track position track so it was only logical for Verstappen to stay out and see if he could defend that first corner on the last 5 laps.

I've just watched it. Best part of the race was the midfield with about 5 laps to go.

Red Bull were goosed when Hamilton dived into the pits. Hamilton had the jump and Verstappen would've came out 2nd. Damned if you do scenario. The only thing that could've saved them would've been a safety car. Sadly that never came.

There was a point where if he jumped in the following lap he'd have came out ahead. I take the point about Perez but just feel with things like that RB don't have the balls to take the risks like that and it'll cost them a shot at the title.

They have have the fastest pit crew who set world records and they have Horner and Newey on top of strategy. The point of dumping Albon for Perez was to allow them the flexibility in strategy. Four races in and they are still playing with one hand tied behind their back.

Merc's look faster on long run tyres which is worrying, but Catalunya is a Mercedes track so they shouldn't panic just yet. Hopefully the cost cap evens up the pack because the resources Merc now have at their disposal is ridiculous. Even if you do produce a good car, Merc will just throw resources at development and within a few weeks they've caught you up.

RB definitely maximised their result with 2nd and fastest lap today. They would've secured that last weekend too if Max didn't exceed track limits on his fastest lap.
