5 goals and 15 assists over 3 seasons isn't bad for a left back, I'd argue he was better defensively than Penrice has been.

I'm not saying he's better overall than Penrice but he was good enough for us and doesn't deserve the unnecessary flak here.

15 assists is more than I remember. Fair enough.

Him moving to Birmingham for 1 million sums up his time at us. If he was doing what some suggested then surely another club would’ve gazumped that and bid 2 million. No one was interested.

Perfect signing for Birmingham though to be fair, a decent SPFL left back who has helped them stroll English league one.

1m was a good price, didn’t have long left on his deal with us and wouldn’t have signed a new contract.

Would’ve commanded more if he had a couple year left.

Because hearts accepted a deal for £1m.

Not sure what relevance this has. Hickey went for 1.5m with little time left on his deal, he must’ve been mediocre too if no one gazumped Bologna? Laugh

When your deal is running out and players have no intention of staying the club is over a barrel. Don’t accept it then the player shortly signs on a pre contract for fuck all.

Man City were after Hickey. So you can throw that theory in the bin. They after Cochrane too?

Hickey and his father chose Bologna as it was best for his development. The ball was in Hickey’s teams court as to what club in Europe he would join. Sad you want to tear down a lad like Hickey and misrepresent his situation as analogous to Cochrane. what a talent Hickey is. Deserves more respect than you give him.

Tbh, I was somewhat shocked Hickey did well at Brentford. I really didnt think he had the pace to play in the EPL as an orthodox full back. Though to be fair I don't think Frank played him that way.

What do I know?

You could tell Hickey was destined for the top from very early on at hearts.  Has to be the most gifted outfield player I’ve seen come through our system, spfl was easy mode for him at 16 it was ridic.  Another of these guys like Wilson who doesn’t seem bothered at all about making the step up just fits in right away.  He was one of the most intelligent plers on the park at 16.

Injuries might fuck him though but if not no reason he can’t go on to be just as successful as Robertson.

Not blessed with top tier physical attributes but plenty of confidence, I'll give you that. Suits modern football with it's various formations out wide. He'll never reach the heights of Robertson (for Liverpool). Brentford is his peak, and i wouldnt be surprised if he struggles to nail down his place again. Just a feeling ... based on nothing really. Italy was a very good move for him.

Hickey is on a very similar trajectory to Robertson, at about the age hickey is now Robertson was just getting his move to hull from Dundee Utd.

Hickey actually has the advantage of a very successful spell in Italy before hitting the prem, at that age I think you knew Robertson was a talent but don’t think anyone would’ve seen the success he had with Liverpool at that point. With Hickey I think he does look like he has a great chance if he continues on but injuries could have him like tierney. Fingers crossed he comes back as strong as he was and keeps improving and he’ll have big teams in for him.

On a very basic analysis level (last time I watched him closely was a pre-season at Gayfield) what I was getting at was that he simply couldnt do what Robertson did for Liverpool, as it was based on pure speed, and first time delivery. He's more like a TTA in that respect but without the delivery, although his crossing is pretty good. He's a clever player, and together with a clever coach in the way Frank set up Brentford iirc, he had three excellent CBs, it allowed Hickey to concentrate on attacking with the fraction of a second extra he needs.

Back to Arbroath. What piqued my interest, or rather what sticks in the mind that day, as I stood on the halfway, right up against the waist high fence not 2 yards from the touchline (if he was so inclined you could almost high five him montyohhyou) was he constantly demanded the ball off Berra irrespective of whether he was marked or near-market. When Berra didnt pass it to him he'd get visibly upset. It was almost like it was drummed into him that he was to ask for the ball every single time irrespective of the cover on him. I'm not sure what says about him or the way he was advised, probably both, tbf.

Scoffed a smokie on the terrace that windy afternoon. Also, had the pitch been constructed 90 degrees either way, you'd have had a battle between the wind and Berra to see how many ball would have drowned. Laugh

I never thought Cochrane was a world beater but he was a solid enough player for us. Was it just the two red cards against Celtic he got? You could put both of them 100% on Naismith’s schoolboy tactics as well.

Weird approach to say Penrice is better because the biggest bid for Cochrane was £1m aged 23, when Penrice is 26 and nobody has ever bid any money for him.

Sent off against hibs too. Managed to hold out for a 1-1 draw.

I might be wrong but I seem to remember that most of his reds came in fairly quick succession Laugh
